Pittsburgh- This #*?! Isn’t Very Funny
Recent comics and drawings by Jim Rugg
The ToonSeum is delighted to present “This #*?! Isn’t Very Funny” an exhibition of art by comic book artist Jim Rugg.
As a self-taught cartoonist, original comic book art was instrumental in his development. This artwork, often viewed out of context of the complete stories, provided more than technical knowledge, it suggested a fragmented, incomplete storytelling style visible in many of Rugg’s recent pages and drawings.
Rugg considers comics a vital artform and is a proponent of introducing the comic medium to new audiences. His work reflects a diverse array of influences from Chip Kidd to R. Crumb and Looney Tunes. His contributions to the vitality of the comic scene has included mini-comics, self-publishing, as well as creator-owned work with independent publishers such as SLG, Image Comics, and Adhouse Books. He has also created work for corporate comic book publishers such as Marvel Entertainment, DC Comics, and Dark Horse Comics. He has created comics-influenced illustrations for a wide variety of clients including Vh1, Circus, New York magazine, Converse, McSweeney’s, Capcom, and Smirnoff.
“This #*?! Isn’t Very Funny” features Jim’s well-known work on Street Angel and Afrodisiac as well new and seldom seen pieces. This is Jim’s first solo exhibition and a first for the ToonSeum as well, as the exhibition reflects the more adult sensibilities of the comic world and parental discretion is advised.
“Jim is a remarkable artist and his work possesses a quality of loving satire that seems to pay tribute and poke fun at the same time. He is one of the most creative artists I know. We didn’t want to limit that creativity in any way.” Said ToonSeum, Executive Director Joe Wos. “So what you see on the walls is uncensored unfiltered artistic brilliance at its best.”
“This #*?! Isn’t Very Funny” will run at the ToonSeum from March 29th-May 6th.
An Opening reception with the artist will take place on March 29th from 7pm-9:30pm.
The ToonSeum is located at 945 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
