Quote of the day | Is Riverdale becoming a ‘lefty utopia’?
“We are progressive, and we do reflect what’s going on with the kids today, but we also have that Mayberry R.F.D. vibe, and that will never change either. Riverdale is a place where everyone is welcome, everyone’s included, and you’re not judged by anything but the content of your character.”
– Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater, in a column at Slate.com
in which writer Ruth Graham observes a shift to the left in Riverdale with the introduction, and subsequent marriage, of gay character Kevin Keller, the wedding of Archie and Valerie, and the arrival of the Occupy movement. Goldwater points out, however, that Archie isn’t a Democrat; he’s an independent: ““Archie goes with whomever is doing the right thing for his friends, for his town, and for his family.”

Why does it have to be a shift to the left? Can’t it just be that Riverdale is just more like the real world? As a right leaning person, there ARE those on my side of the philosophical argument that protest and cry about these things but there are those of us, who are not at all liberal, that have no problem with the stories that are being told in Archie comics these days.

Wait? What? Archie and Valerie? Huh? Did I blink and nobody blogged about it?
I always viewed Archie and Jughead like Dobie Gillis and Maynard G. Krebs. Neither is politically active… that’s Betty’s gig.

Can’t wait to see Jughead push for the legalization of pot.

That is a fair point that people don’t fit into neat little boxes politically. For example, except for those who work in comics, Black liberals generally believe marriage is a one man, one woman union. Hence, they would be digusted by Kevin Keller french kissing then “marrying” a Black guy. (Let’s not even start with Keller’s boyfriend’s Blackness being called into question because of his lifestyle choice.)

At the risk of invoking an online cliche, I have to ask …. “Source?”
