Blank Slate books, one of the leading publishers of the U.K. graphic novel renaissance, is publishing its first art book: Creature Couture by by Felt Mistress, aka Louise Evans. She produces amazing work, recreating the art of Jonathan Edwards and other illustrators and cartoonists (including Luke Pearson, Pete Fowler and others) as soft toys and puppets. To quote the press release:
Since 1994, Felt Mistress has been hard at work, creating a legion of one-of-a-kind bespoke creatures. Working collaboratively with her partner, illustrator and toy designer Jonathan Edwards, the inimitable Louise Evans has brought hundreds and hundreds of amazing characters to life and has been featured in countless exhibitions worldwide.”
Collecting over 8 years of work, Blank Slate and editor Woodrow Phoenix (Plastic Culture: How Japanese Toys Conquered the World, Nelson) are proud to present Creature Couture. From Demetri the pipe-smoking Yeti, to monster-truck lovin’ Dwight Klugg, to fan-favourite adventurer Tippy Winkles, the book features well in excess of 500 creatures and contains character information, Jonathan Edwards’ original design ideas, collaborations with other artists and more. Also includes interviews with celebrated collaborations such as Jon Burgerman, Pete Fowler, Ben Newman, John Knox, Nobrow and more.
The book is available to pre-order from the publisher now, and includes a free vinyl toy and entry into a raffle to win the “cover star,” Elspeth. Editor Woodrow Phoenix has sent along some rather impressive preview pages. Given the track records of all involved, this will be a very handsome book.
