Would you pay $6,000 for Thanos’ first appearance?

No sooner did Marvel Studios confirm development a Guardians of the Galaxy movie at Comic-Con International — moving the cinematic universe in a decidedly more cosmic direction — than the speculator market kicked into gear.

The Los Angeles Times reports that by Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the Marvel announcement, one dealer was trying to sell a near-mint copy of the first appearance for Thanos at 100 times its usual price. The profile of the Mad Titan has, of course, risen considerably since his shadowy cameo in Marvel’s billion-dollar blockbuster The Avengers.

“I’m asking $6,000 for it,” the dealer told Geoff Boucher. “I know that’s high — hey, that’s really high — but that’s next year’s price.”

The comic in question is February 1973′s The Invincible Iron Man #55, by Jim Starlin, Mike Friedrich and Mike Esposito, which another dealer said is unlikely to fetch that hefty figure. However, he said he sold a copy for $1,200, saying, “That is the chosen book this year.”

I wanna see how this plays out. In my mind the guardians of the galaxy is Vance astro,charlie-27,etc. Does this mean the issue with them isn’t gonna count as 1st appearance or are they gonna count the current line up as 1st Guardians appearance? In any case $6,000 for that…Uhhh..No!!

Wasn’t Iron Man #55 the first appearance of Thanos? I don’t recall a Guardians of the Galaxy appearance…..

The answer to the question is ‘no’ and always ‘no.’

There simply isn’t the kind of widespread affection for the characters like there is for the Avengers and X-Men. And there very well may never be.

You’re very right, Terence. I must’ve been daydreaming and shifted off in another direction. It’s the first appearance of THANOS; the Guardians debuted four years earlier. I’ve changed the post to reflect that.

Well not with that attitude there won’t be. But the great part about life is that we’re not living in a vacuum. Things change, the Guardians’ time is coming, and fuck the X-Men

c’mon, we all know Iron Man #55 is the first appearance of THANOS, not the Guardians. Way to do your research. Guardians (original team from the future) first appeared in a book called Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969).

I know this whole article is very small and not really important but at least get your stuff straight. You could have a quick google search.

As I said, Mike, I had a brain fart after a long Comic-Con weekend; I’ve changed the post.

Come on Brute Force movie!

Iron Man #55 is getting ridiculous prices already. It is also the first appearance of Drax the Destroyer, who will (presumably) be in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Speculator boom is about to hit for many of Marvel’s cosmic heroes I think. In terms of the actual Guardians, the first appearance of the Guardians price will depend on what Guardians (I think) actually make it into the book…I mean, if none of the original Guardians are in the movie, I don’t know how much the actual first appearance of the Guardians will rise. It is looking like they are going with the most current incarnation though.

I would love it if the movie actually ends up leading to a new strong, ongoing comic book. Marvel has done some great things with its cosmic universe lately and it would be great if for ONCE, a movie could spurn a comic book onward and upward, not the other way around.

I’m hoping that the first appearances of Rocket Raccoon and Star Lord at least double what I paid for them last year. That plus $5 would buy me 2 tickets and a popcorn at the next Marvel movie.

This Thanos revival is gob-smacking. I remember back when all we had were wood-burning Mad Titans!

Whoa!! That must have been from evil Mike.T . That wasn’t me :)

And speculators continue to be the downfall of the industry…

How much can I get for my Warlock collection?

How much do you think a copy of the English variance of Iron Man #55 would be worth?
