Shelf Porn Saturday | Comics and music collide in Canada

If you’re a fan of music and comics, this Shelf Porn goes to 11 … today we’re pleased to present shelves from Jay in Canada, who shows off his collection of comics, toys and music-related items.

If you have some shelves of comics, action figures or other related collectibles you’d like to show off, send me a write-up and some jpgs at jkparkin@yahoo.com.

And now here’s Jay …

*****

I work in sales and have been a collector of comics/video games and metal for over 15 years, and this is some of my collection. You will see everything from Final Fantasy PC Games to my Campbell wall and other rare European metal albums/box sets. As well as my gear, I am a former semi-professional metal musician.

why is it every one seems to just tack the comics to the wall in their bags and not use a plastic comic book showcase. seems inefficient to me.

Reminds me of my bedroom when I was 15.

They’re in borderless frames actually.

The best stuff he has are the guitars. The comics really dont belong as part of front room decor. The comics look rather new and innocuous.Sorry,I do love collectors and their stuff, but this is no big whoop.

Jay – I think it looks great! And you’ve given me an idea with those borderless frames. I’ve got an empty overhang that would fit a row of about 10 comics in those frames. Nice!

Thanks there’s always going to be the negative people who don’t even know what they’re looking at to say something bad. The frame are a 1.25 each from the dollar store.

Nevermind the haters.. Looks good man..

Awesome, Jay. I’m envious of your dedicated room to everything.

You don’t post on the BW&BK message board too, do you?

Comics are ok but nothing special. But looks like a nice room to unwind in.

is that a PRS? nice.

No wonder Parkin’s finding it difficult to find people to post their “Man Caves” here – too many rude twats with nothing better to do than pay out on someone’s love of the medium. So his room doesn’t meet your standards – shut the f*ck up and move on. Don’t post negative comments to someone who’s going out of their way to share. We’re not debating comics here – use the vitriol for those forums.

The comics in picture frames are a great idea. Looks really good.

Haters gonna hate, nothing you can do about that. If an online stranger didn’t appreciate my work it wouldn’t bother me in the least because that’s his opinion and taste, ain’t nothing you can do about that. In fact, you ppl shouldn’t be such sensitive babies and stop being so defensive. You might learn something amidst all that criticsm.
But in the end, who cares? You’re doing it for yourself, not anybody else.

NICE I thought of putting comic on wall but all I had was plastic bags and blue-tac. does the sun fade the colour on the comics ( because that’s apart of the reason y I didn’t do it with the plastic and blue-tac.)

@Flynn, they’re all in borderless frames and bagged in back board. Nothing is in the sun, so I have never had any issue with sun fade / damage.

@duckie192 No it’s a Schecter and the other is Jackson Stealth.

Honestly the criticism’s don’t bother, me if you’re not a J Scott Campbell fan or a metal fan then you’re not going to understand the things in my room. All my Cd’s/box sets are either limited editions, out of print original pressing or Original European pressing. While the stuff in my room may not float everybody’s boat, nothing in my room is easily come by with the exception of some newer standard covers.

@UNcanny Derek, I haven’t posted on BW&BK in years. The reason that book is on my wall is because my band has a review for out first album in that issue.

Thanks for posting these pics, Jay.

I especially love the comic wall. It looks incredible.

Seems like a cool room to unwind in, in one form or another.

WOW a JSC Shrine !!!! that was awesome !!

@Malvin Cheers! :)

like the layout, then again u gotta do something to cover the wall paper and i think that works

Just commenting on what you said about most of it is hard to come by. Your comics on the wall are mostly variants am I correct? If so, then I do the same thing to mine. Also check out hobby lobby for individual frames, most of the time they are 50%. Other than that, great room!

@Jeremy M Yes, they’re all J Scott Campbell covers. Most of them are variants. 1:10′s 1:25′s 1;100′s there are a few Midtown Comic NYCC Exclusives, the 2012 Toronto Fan Expo Exclusive (signed). The Campbell Witchblade Fantastic Realms Exclusive which is long out of print as Fantastic Realms is long gone. The Ultimate thor LBCC Exclusive. The G.I Joe pin up which was a 1:50 for buying G.I. Joe #1. Batman 608, the Jim Lee “batman over gotham cover” , the German variant of the same book. The German foil variant of Batman $ Robin The boy wonder RRP Limited to 1000. The Ebas Penny for your soul #4 Limited to 500, Vampirella Jay Company Exclusive limited to 500.

To name same of them…

Hey Jay, looks awesome. Do you find the comics get creased or flattened in those frames?

@Duston Actually it does quite the opposite. I have flattened wrinkles and waves in book
With no trace after just a few months in the frame.
Some people pay to have that done, I just found a free way to do it.

I just wanted to echo some of the more positive comments here and say to Jay thanks for letting us have a look at your comics and love for music. This is not a museum room, like some of the more pricey rooms we have seen here (and there is nothing wrong with those either), this is a room to go hang out and just chill and probably actually be comfortable in. I’m glad that you actually SHOW OFF your comics and the artist who you like – Just b/c it is not a ‘vintage’ book does not mean it shouldn’t be displayed.

For the haters, if you don’t like it, keep your pie hold shut and if you think your ‘man cave’ is so freaking awesome, ‘man up’ and show us your set-up.

Yeah I this is my chill room I jam here, chill here, play vids here.
I have my favourite artists here, my music and everything else I dig
Surrounding me. I collect modern books but they re not just randomly placed for laughs, there’s a method to my madness.

Also, thanks to the people who had something positive to say and for the support.

I like the room. I got nothing compared to this. Just a bunch of long boxes in the basement and a corner in my bedroom. I would love to have my own room to fix up.

Also for all the people who have said negative things; chill out. This is HIS room not yours. Everyone has a different style and flow to their comic rooms. This room is exactly what i would want mine to look like eventually; minus all the music stuff (I have no musical muscles in my body what so ever).

Love it! Hater-Pricks be damned! I don’t why one would want to hate one someone else’s space? Especially when we are all from the same culture and should know that it is hard to get it together like this. Great job!
P.S. I have Kanaeda and his bike in my living room as well as a Batman black and whites statue(the Bisley one) .

Thanks Jasen the Batman statue is by Kotobukiya. It’s from my Arkham City collectors edition.

Nice! I thought it was the Tim Sale black and white Batman statue. Check out High on Fire and Intronaut if you like heavy music!

Loving the batman 608 variant and the jscott Campbell fan expo cover…..go Canada!

@Megatron Thanks, I especially like the German variant.
They split the Hush run into 6 books, instead our run that was split into 12. So it has a nice thick cover along the
line of a graphic novel. It’s also a
Limited run variant.

Love the collection, (as music and comics are actually my two favourite things in the world), but man, you need a bigger room, lol. It’s a tad cluttered. Also, major props for having BW&BK on the wall! Loved that mag.

Nice setup, Jay!

Trust me, a bigger room would be awesome lol

hey,
way to go jay, im loving your style, its always refreshing to see someone who can have more than one hobby and mesh them together in theyr nerd vault, as far as the hating going on, if you would like to show us your superior collection go ahead otherwise STFU, as far as my 2 cents, I hate the wallpaper you have, the blue stuff not the awesome comic book wallpaper you are making lol.
rock on my friend.

very nice room Jay. I have 10,000 comic books and 10,000 cds (music of all kinds including a good amount of metal) and you have just given me some cool ideas how to show off some of it.

the interesting thing about your room is its a room that gets lived in & used, with comics helping to create a vibe as well as a look to the room’s interior.

as opposed to some of the other rooms we have seen which are more really nice storage/show rooms. very utilitarian.

neither is a wrong way, just depends on what one wants to use in one’s own room.

There really is no “wrong answer”.

Interior design like art is very subjective and you have a good way of handling the naysayers.

metal music & comic book lovers have always had, and will always have, detractors so you know how to handle adverse criticism very well. dont sweat the small stuff and just rock on.

I am an architect by day, so I very much like what you are doing using books & music items as a kind of interior design finish. just like some people use paint, paintings, wall hangings, sculptural stuff, and framed pictures.

your art is your comic books and music but not soley as they were intended by the comic book & music creators & companies.

thats being creative & leaving your own mark.

creative people dont usually follow the status quo or at least create their own version of a status that suites their life & needs.

cheers and all the very best!

@NIMER I couldn’t be bother to take the hours to take down the wallpaper… especially when it’s just my personal chill room. Thanks though.

@dark rabbit As I said previousl, most people aren’t even sure what they’re looking at. To say that my collectables aren’t worth anything just because the comics are not silver age, or the person isn’t a metal head is just untrue and they obviously haven’t done their research. It’s really no biggy, I love chilling in here and the vibe this room gives off is awesome.

Thanks for the idea! I am looking for a way to display some of my comics. This looks great! My only concern is I have a few CGC books and I hope to add some more and I need to figure out something to do for those if I were to go this route.
