Marvel to collect Marvel NOW! first issues in 688-page omnibus

Taking a page from DC Comics’ New 52 playbook, Marvel will collect all of the first issues from its Marvel NOW! initiative in a 688-page oversized hardcover omnibus edition, Publishers Weekly reports. Arriving in June, the $99.99 volume will feature a cover by Joe Quesada.

Announced in July, Marvel NOW! was billed as an easy entry point into the Marvel Universe with a rollout of new or relaunched series that began in October with Uncanny Avengers and continues through February with titles like Uncanny X-Men, Nova and Fearless Defenders. The omnibus will collect more than 30 issues.

Buoyed by Marvel NOW!, the publisher led the direct market in both dollar and unit amounts in November, and claimed eight of the Top 10 spots on the Diamond Comic Distributors sales chart. All-New X-Men #1 took the top spot, with the debuts of Captain America, Deadpool, Indestructible Hulk, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and Thor: God of Thunder, and the second issue of Uncanny Avengers crowding out most of the competition.

Thin paper stock, glued binding, overpriced? Keep it going Marvel, you’re on a roll.

Who would buy this? I get the idea of having an expensive omnibus collecting a full run of comics, but this is just a bunch of disjointed first issues.

Weird collection for crazy dudes. Marvel NOW and their rebranding gimmick every 20-30 issues.
All this renumbering, renaming, relaunching is confusing/tiresome and I would be more excited if AvX was 6-7 issues long since it felt ‘forced’ and overstretched, weekly two months only – June & July and Consequences mini in August would suffice. Bendis would have left Avengers earlier, we would be closer to Age of Ultron and some fresh books wouldn’t need another hard ‘reboot’ i.e. X-Men Legacy is the continuation of established characters and past story lines, Uncanny X-Men is still a Cyclops team book (as for New Avengers vol.2 it shouldn’t have even been released as #1 because it was still Luke Cage etc.). Finally I’ll say that Uncanny X-Force should be renamed to Deadly or Lethal X-Force since that would correctly signify it’s something different. Also one monthly solo (Savage) Wolverine book is enough with the additional second MAX series !
