Dan DiDio, Jim Lee and DC artists to appear on Syfy’s Face Off

DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee will appear with a half-dozen DC creators on the Jan. 22 episode of Face Off, the Syfy competition series that pits special-effects makeup artists against each other.

The episode, shot in July at Comic-Con International, challenges the competitors to create their own superheroes with assistance and advice from Lee, Mark Buckingham, Cliff Chiang, Tony S. Daniel, David Finch, Nicola Scott and J.H. Williams III. The winning design will be featured in Justice League Dark #16, which goes on sale Jan. 30.

On Face Off, contestants are whittled down each week until only one remains. The winner receives $100,000, a 3013 Fiat 500 and a change to become a guest lecturer at the Make Up For Ever academies in New York City and Paris.

The DC Comics/superhero episode airs Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.

Face Off is a fun show, and one my wife enjoys quite a bit. I saw the mention of the Face Off winner being in JL Dark 16 when the book was solicited, but wasn’t sure how that was going to work, wondering if one of the monster designs from last season would appear, but a super-hero episode in the new season explains it.

If you haven’t seen the show, give it a look, it’s fun and has a nice “geek” edge to it, giving it a spark that many “reality/competition” shows lack because the contestants mostly share a common passion for the material and genre that blunts the cut throat angsty aspects of most shows of that ilk. And some of the designs are just awesome and impressive.

The consulting artists should have been Rob Liefeld, Greg Land, Jim Balent, MC Wyman, Jim Callahan and Pat Lee. Let’s see THEIR drawings brought to life.

If Liefeld was one of them they would have to put real life pouches everywhere.
