Dark Horse crowns King Conan: Hour of the Dragon in May

Dark Horse will adapt one of Robert E. Howard’s last published Conan stories beginning in May with the debut of King Conan: Hour of the Dragon.

MTV Geek reports the new ongoing series, by Timothy Truman, Tomás Giorello and José Villarrubia, will be based on the 1935-36 serial The Hour of the Dragon, also known as Conan the Conqueror. It centers on a middle-aged Conan, now king of Aquilonia, as his throne is threatened by conspirators who hope to depose him in favor of the kingdom’s rightful heir by resurrecting Xaltotun, an ancient sorcerer from the empire of Acheron.

King Conan: Hour of the Dragon, which features covers by Gerald Parel and Sanjulian, debuts May 29.

Wait. It’s an “ONGOING” series? So in other words, it’s “The Hour of the Dragon” in the same way “Conan: Queen of the Black Coast” by Brian Wood is “Robert E Howard’s Queen of the Black Coast”. Meaning, they have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL STORIES BY Robert E Howard.

Yeah.

I’ll pass on this ersatz Conan series too

Hey, now, Tim Truman did a fine job adapting rogues in the house, and i have high hopes this will be good too.

well, as for me, the effort that Gil kane and Busema did back in 74, 75 is next to impossible to top. Think I’ll pull them out!

vjj, Queen of the Black Coast, the first arc in Brian Wood’s series, in fact WAS an adaptation of Howard’s story by the same name. And series is currently using characters from that story. So it has a lot “to do with the actual stories by Robert E Howard”.

OLeg89, in Queen of the Black Coast, Belit dies at the hand of a winged-simian horror. Where’s that in Brian Wood’s story?

Brian Wood’s expanded stories are somewhat “OK”, but they’ve been getting rather boring and the quality of the Art has been deteriorating badly. I don’t mind the absence of magic/supernatural/lovecraftian horror but eventually that aspect of Robert E Howard’s Hyboria has to make an appearance, and until it does I won’t be buying anymore of Brian Wood’s “Conan”.

Pretty sure from what’s Tim said that it’s a 12 issue series _just_adapting the novel.

@vjj “OLeg89, in Queen of the Black Coast, Belit dies at the hand of a winged-simian horror. Where’s that in Brian Wood’s story?”

At the end of my 25 issue run?

Mr. Wood, respectfully, you’re doing this wrong. You’re applying logic to this discussion. Don’t you see that’s getting in the way of vjj’s vitriol and sense of entitlement? I mean, it’s almost like you want people to judge your work based on the completed product instead of making assumptions steeped in their heavily-biased supposition and inference. That’s…that’s just crazy talk, sir.
