Quote of the Day | ‘Let them do what they do best’

jimmy palmiotti

“The trick to getting the best work from your talent is to let them do what they do best, give them room to breathe and to make sure you encourage their ideas, not squash them.”

Jimmy Palmiotti, on his Facebook page, offering advice to publishers in dealing with creators. In addition to writing such titles as All-Star Western, Batwing and The Human Bomb for DC, he also co-founded and edited the Marvel Knights line with Joe Quesada.

I wonder how long it will be before creators like Jimmy and Jim Zub choose to bypass publishers altogether. Something like Comixology Submit might mean no more getting “squashed” or fired before your series even starts (in the case of Zub). And readers get an unedited, undiluted end-product that better reflects the creator’s original vision.

“Let the creators create.”

How is it that this never seems to be the case at DC?

Matt- Palmiotti seems to be one of the select few who is actually allowed to do just that.

Wspecially good advice if the creator in question is Wolverine!

Jimmy should be EIC at DC.

It’s a great quote, but the fact that he has to say this as “advice” is a bummer from every angle. It should be the norm to let creators create, and inspire, encourage, and educate them… not the exception or the ideal (“maybe one day…”).

And then there’s Batman: Odyssey….
