Mark Millar honored by Queen Elizabeth II

Comics writer and film producer Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Wanted, Jupiter’s Legacy) has been recognized by Queen Elizabeth II as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to film and literature on the just-released Queen’s Honours Birthday list.

“These kind of honours you usually see going to other people, so it’s nice,” Millar told The Herald. “I got an honorary doctorate last year so I am starting to feel very respectable. I want my kids to write MBE on my Father’s Day card.” Millar received an honorary doctorate of letters from Glasgow Caledonian University last year.

He later joked on his message board, “Soon the Sith will rise again and I will take my throne in Parliament!!!”

An order of chivalry established in 1917 by King George V, the Order of the British Empire consists of five ranks: Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross, Knight Commander or Dame Commander, Commander, Officer and Member. Last year Millar’s former writing partner, Grant Morrison, received the same honor.

Now he’ll need hat size 60.

She’s actually the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There hasn’t been a Queen of England since pre-1707 even though she’s habitually referred to as such.

The world has officially come to an end.

Thanks Blair … I’ve adjusted the headline.

Yep turn the Hulk into a naked cannibal yelling about Freddie Prinze Jr, win top honors.

Don’t think he’ll get any honours from the french though lol “see ultimates

What a joke.

Awesome, congrats. I really think Ultimates has been the template for some of these big superhero action movies (Most notably Avengers).

They always give these things out to people who actually oppress, dumb-down, and distract the population.

He was actually honored for ‘services to film and literature that start off really good in premise, but kind of let you down towards the end of the story.’ :)

Did Alan Moore get one?

… Well shit!

“Did Alan Moore get one?”

Alan Moore isn’t Scottish is he?

Unbelievable! Congratulations to Mr. Millar., wasn’t expecting that. I remember reading ‘Big Dave’ by Millar and Grant Morrison in 2000ad in the nineties, and in one story Dave actually gets involved in a Tarantino style gun fight with the royal family and kills them all! Including a showdown with the Queen herself! Guess it’s all about who you know, rather than who you depict getting gunned down in your published works.

…..hang on, Morrison got one too?!

Morrison got the “better” award. Interesting that Millar, supporter of Scottish independence, accepted an award from his Landowner.

@Dan Jimmy Saville got one of these things, among many other pedophiles. It seems Lawyers don’t vett the list.

Wow! Congratulations to Mark! That was quite unexpected, given most of his work’s rather edgy nature, but well deserved nonethelesss. Regardless of whether one likes his works, he has undoubtedly done a lot to promote comic books and creators, and is still going strong, despite the fact that with all his success he could just retire and do nothing for the rest of his life. It’s nice to see that his love for his work and his success are getting recognised. And it may pave the way even more for comics to be seen as just as good a form of art as music, cinema, etc. Now to work on maturing rabid fanboys that just can’t help themselves but throw passive-aggressive tantrums about anything they don’t like and we are set!
