Nightwing fan series ‘Grayson: Earth One’ premieres

Writer/director Hisonni Johnson has debuted the first episode of Grayson: Earth One, a fan-produced web series that re-imagines the origin of Dick Grayson/Nightwing in a familiar setting, with familiar characters, but without the DC Universe continuity.

“The twist being that Richard Grayson has never had the good fortune of being adopted as a child by Bruce Wayne, thus never becoming the boy wonder,” Johnson writes. “Instead, we have a Richard Grayson that had to fend for himself on the unforgiving streets of Gotham and, even worse, the streets of Bludhaven. A character that has to overcome years of dog eat dog mentality to become a selfless and kind individual. To ultimately fulfill his destiny and become a HERO.”

Judging from this video, it’s Arrow meets Catwalk, with occasional Dark Knight cameos. And, really, the acting and production standards aren’t that far removed from a typical CW series.

In conjunction with the premiere, Johnson has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $40,000 to produce five more episodes — a full season.

How is that indiegogo campaign even remotely legal?

I get that anyone can make fan stuff, (though at this level of time and effort, why you wouldn’t just make your own ideas I don’t know), but this is using trademarked characters to raise money.

From the sounds of it, no one is making any money from the project. The guy just needs the money to finish up the whole thing and get it out there. Though i do wonder what DC will do if they catch wind of this. The dude must have asked permission to produce this, surely.

Tonally this kind of reminds me of the Birds of Prey tv series. It’s a fun watch.

Hey guys!

Sorry you dont dig the show but this is legal. All of the funds go to production and its free adverting for WB. I paid to make this myself because I… Wanted to. It was something I was passionate about. I got nominated for a streamy in 2013 for my original work and won LA web fest a few months ago for my follow up project. When its all said and done its simply a way for artist to refine their skills and connect with like minded individuals.

None of this was meant to personally offend anyone. So please before you attack it. Give it a chance. Remember that there are people just like you on the other side of this film. People that donated blood (literally) to pay for food to pay his cast. Not a rich guy throwing money around. This project was made with sacrifice. All for you to enjoy. Thanks for reading and I hope your not as angry about our attempts to make you free entertainment.

Warner Bros. wrote:”Warner Bros. definitely appreciates the enthusiasm and respect of its fans. We will continue to monitor the use of Warner Bros. properties as used in fan films. However, we will only consider taking action against such films that are either commercial in nature, are commercially exploited or otherwise engage in or depict inappropriate activity. Further, we will try to work with the comic book conventions, such as Comic-Con, to develop fan film screening programs that do not conflict with Warner Bros. rights in its properties. “

I wish you all the best, Hisonni!

I’ve done the Indiegogo thing and it’s a nerve-wracking pain in the daily butt.

A Nightwing fan film doesn’t personally interest me all that much, but I checked out your site and how does one watch ‘Olympia’ in Canada? I like the look of that!

Ill send ya a link my friend!

So Dick Graysons knows where Mr. Freeze is holding a number of women prisoner, to be used in biological experiments, and did nothing until Barbara Gordon was abducted?

Aside from that glaring plot hole, this wasn’t bad.

I guess I could see other people liking this. But I personally did not care for it for a bunch of reasons. But kudos for doing what you wanna do!

I thought this was fantastic. Im a filmmaker and I can see the amount of time, effort and MONEY that it took to put something like this together. Guys for you all bashing, just try to see how much it would cost to buy one of the lights he is using in the shoot, even rent it, thats without taking into consideration talent, food, cameras etc.. Specially TALENT. This guy got actors to play the parts guys, remember the Kingdom Come thing that came out recently with a bunch of cosplayers dressed as superheroes and how horrible the acting was? Now watch Grayson Earth one again and try to even fathom how much it cost to BUILD A SET for that bar.

Dont take for granted real professional that are fans trying to do something cool for you guys to enjoy, this is how a fan film shoudlve been shot, and this series as it is could be the pilot for anything showing on CW right now, even BETTER then some of the stulff on TV right now production wise.

Im donating what I can for the kickstarter campaing, and I would also donate my services for whatever you guys need done, this is a great effort from a real filmmaker and all the “haters” out there should really be thankful someone banked out of their own pocket the 10 or 15k it possibly took to make this pilot

Great work and keep it up, I as a fan and as a filmmaker appreciate your effort,

Interesting concept. I’d watch a second episode.

I really liked this alot! The music was cool and they guy that plays Grayson is top notch!

I think the point of this episode is to reveal Dick Grayson as a guy that has had to “look out for number 1″ but is beginning to realize his . . . true calling.

Keep up the good work!

Man this is the TITS!!!! Can’t wait to see the next one!!!!!!

I don’t normally comment but had to say that overall it was great. Good acting, nice fight choreography, loved the editing, decent plot (not perfect) but I was very impressed.

All in all a great short. I am a huge Nightwing fan! Keep up the good work.

Hisonni, that was great! Definitely going to share this with friends!

Props to all involved, seriously. Takes a lot of time and effort and sacrifice and pure Love of the material We all Love. I for one look forward to future installments!

Great job! Been a Nightwing/Grayson fan since I started reading comics in the early 90s, I like the direction you went with this version of the universe. Good cameos and choreography, I look forward to seeing more! There’s definitely some tweaking to be done, but a great start!

Nice, it’s pretty sweet that Warner Brothers is cool with this too. The only thing I am questioning is why not Jason Todd. It feels more down his way.

This actually isnt that bad. I like the pacing, feels like you’re reading a quick one-shot. The production feels about the same as the CW shows but the pacing and plot/world put it above the CW shows imo.

Sound-wise, I would lower Grayson’s shuffling jacket effects for the wider scenes. Just a small nit-pick from an audiophile.

VERY cool. And much better than I expected when I pushed play! HUGE Nightwing fan and given your unique set-up, this is really spot on. If I had $40k to give I’d do it. Fingers crossed it all gets up. This 15 mins was better than all of Smallville put together.

Awesome. I enjoyed watching it, and would like to see a second episode. Pretty great casting, and it’s awesome that Helena and Carrie are both in there.

Why isn’t on Kick starter?? Isn’t that the more ‘popular’ route to raise money.

You know what James? I don’t know lol. Is kickstarter superior to indiegogo?

I’m a huge DC and Marvel fan but I never got huge into the comics. I know some of the writing is top notch but I love the idea of not sticking to so much source material as long as it doesn’t come out so campy (Batman and Robin, anyone?). This was brilliant. I watched it last night and it was really good. I was surprised but ultimately pleased that Fries wasn’t wearing a silly icicle suit. I truly hope this ends up a hit and you get the chance to debut it on tv. One suggestion: don’t listen to anyone who tries to limit your vision. It’s a superhero story and anything can happen.

JB! Thats awesome advice!

I agree with JB completely.
When i saw the link for it on “Geeks are Sexy” on my facebook feed i first thought. eh probably some short butchered youtube video of a superhero in the making. But no, it was fantastic. now, to die hard comic fans they would probably get a little more anal about… well someone posted about the whole Grayson knowing where Freeze was the whole time and didn’t do shit about it thing.
But they need to think in a real world mentality, first off i don’t care who you are, if you know where a psychotic villain who has plenty of henchmen to kill for him is that does not mean you would go out and attack the dude alone. unless you had some serious emotional drive to, which your story gave. and again, realistically grayson was losing that fight, he battled them heroically. but it was definite that he would fail, that is until (unknowingly) backup arrived and saved his ass. and to top off the badassary and intensity of it all, he humbly gives the credit to Gordons daughter. So this is for those anal dwelling comic critics, you can’t diss this video. by the way, the actors for Freeze and nightwing were perfect. might want a more intimidating batman though..
anyways It was excellent, and Hisonni good luck.

Thank you! If we get the whole season… I’m gunna make you proud sir! Thanks for being open minded and giving my show a chance.

This was great! Dick is my favorite character in the DCU and you guys portrayed him really well. The fight scene made me cringe only because the interaction between bats and nightwing, but it was still in character. I hope you guys get new episodes and you should check out the fanart of your universe its awesome.

I see this show’s potential. It has good pacing, some solid acting and a dark, gritty atmosphere. My only gripes with the show is that EVERY ACTION SEQUENCE is in SLOW MOTION, as in every punch that they throw is in slow mo, it kinda drags out the fight sequences a bit. Maybe if they speed it up a bit, i would be totally fine with it. So overall, my thoughts of the series is overall positive for now,

I enjoyed this immensely.
Its up there with some of the main stream junk produced buy TV stations and even pushed to the big screens by the distributors. Keep the Faith my good man. Keep the Faith !
