Shelf Porn Face-off | Who has the best Shelf Porn? You decide!

My name is Shawn Hoklas and I live just outside of Chicago. I’ve been reading comics for as long as I can remember and a collector of comics since about 1988 with Detective Comics 588. I’m also a fan of original art, toys and statues. I hope you enjoy the photos of some of my collection. Thanks for looking!

My comic room has taken over two decorated rooms, and one room that’s still just long boxes and statue boxes. These pictures are of course the decorated rooms :)

In the past five years I have gotten into original art. Love these Green Lantern splash pages.

You can see more art here from Breyfogle, Ivan Reis, Doug Mahnke, Patrick Gleason and Ethan van Sciver

The comic that started the obsession. I bought this comic off the shelf brand new, then 20+ years had artist Norm Breyfogle sign it.

Was a huge Super Powers fan as a kid. My dad got me most of the figures you see here. And the Hall of Justice that you see in a later photo.

I like to mix up the comics on the wall. I’ll grab a stack at random and place them on the wall so there’s always something new to look at.

Bowen statues are starting to take over. The Fantastic Four are a favorite of mine. Also love Dead Space, hence the light up Isaac Clarke statue.

While both are very nice collections, I voted for Shawn’s. I guess what swung it in his favor was the fact that I have most of my old action figures in great condition, too, but rather than display them on shelves, I gave them to my 4-year-old son to play with. He has nearly complete collections of MOTU, Thundercats, DC Super Powers and Marvel Secret Wars and tons of others. But, those were kept from my childhood and really didn’t take any monetary investment on my part. Shawn’s room(s!) also has a great display, but the statues and books and SPACE devoted to it all looks to be money well spent. Again, they’re both nice, but I personally would be most proud of a collection like Shawn’s.

Shawn’s by far. That is nerd paradise.

Both are spectacular, but I voted for Shawn’s room because it is visually stunning, as well as what *I* would desire as my own collector’s paradise. Kudos for both for their dedication and vision.

Shawn’s the best one, I am dying and salivating looking at all those comics and original art

Shelf Porn is the stupidest phrase I’ve heard in a while. Seeing as people do keep porn on shelves as well. Why don’t you say “toys” or “nerd stuff” or “memorabilia”

Shawn wins, though perhaps it is a contest over who has more disposable income, or straight up, more income?

@Chip because we treat what is on the “shelf” as though it is “porn”. Hence, “shelf porn.” Or maybe a nicer, faker, portmanteau is what you seek? Shelfporn.

Now, what the hell is a portmanteau?

Shawn`s is a bit better but both are excellent and anyone would be proud to own either.

It’s no shelf porn as long as it doesn’t include red lights in the glas vitrines LOL
Can you describe more how you did the glas vitrines with the figurines? That looks awesome. I bought my first 2 Hot Toys Action Figures and wondered where I could get those glas vitrines or how to do them in general?

I vote for Shawn’s room. It’s true he does comics reviews over at my https://comicspectrum.com/ site, but I tried to be unbiased. His room has a very classy look to it and amazing array of comics art & books.

He gets the nod for being comic-centric and he has a LOT of stuff that doesn’t look cluttered (which is the problem with my own space). Also a very LARGE amount of space. Lucky man to have that amount of square footage for his stuff!

They’re both fantastic, really. Can you really compare them? Shawn’s looks like a beautiful museum that never gets touched, and Tommy’s looks like a place some one really lives and works.

These are both great, I have to vote for Shawn because I dig the shelving and the killer original art.
Kudos to Tommy’s Hellboy figures, Indy costume and pinball machine though!
The real question is what the heck do these guys do for a living?

xxx,

I myself got my large vitrines from a skate shop going out of business and the wall display cases originally were from a cell phone store that I converted for my Joes. Other wise you can get some cool cabinets from IKEA, but if you keep your eyes out, you can score free ones like I did.

Thanks for voting
Tommy

Wow, that GI Joe collection (plus the inclusion of the Transformer Topspin) takes the cake!

Both collections look really great! (and we must remember that the most important opinion about a collection and the way it’s displayed is that from the collector him/herself).

But i voted -without a hint of doubt- for Shawn’s, because it’s most COMIC-CENTRED than the other one. I love comics with all my heart, but i’ve been never been interested in the action-figures/toys hobbie.

I think they are completely different hobbies. A los of fans happen to be interested in both as a natural thing, but others like me have absolutely no interest in the second one.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Fun to share the photos :). It’s a fun work in progress!

Wow. Shawn wins but both are awesome. Mine was featured like a month ago and both of yours blow my collection out of the water! Shawn we seem to have similar taste in comics and living areas. I’m in Schaumburg and I was telling my gf how I wanted my guest room to look, and it was pretty much a miniature version of yours.

loved shawns room including the art but had to go with tommy most for he wound up not only shelling out a fortune for his own pinball machine but also his own centipede which had to cost him a big fortune. not to mention love indies coat sticking above greyskull

Is that statue if Susan Storm really backwards..?
Other than that, his collection looks stunning in presentation.

No Xris, she’s facing the right direction :)

Shawn, no question. Dude is clearly loaded – that house, that collection, those toys! – and it shows in the quality and arrangement of these rooms. Really nice stuff.

page 2 is pretty and looks like a museum… but page 1 wins- just for all the cool stuff. I ilke the gi.joe shelf and the random junky one too. It’s more man cave, than manseum.

Where does he keep Golobulus in his 82-89 collection. That seems to be quite a dilemma!

Definitely Shwn’s room is a museum, because it enjoys every object has. A dream place!

Shawn. While I do love Tommy’s and it brings out nostalgic feelings. I just see myself spending more time in Shawn’s place

Bub,
Unfortunately Golobulus, did not fit in the case, but I do have him packed away.

Thanks

i definitely vote for shawn. i would die for some of your books. i also like how organized everything is. where did you get the shelves?

Thanks Sean,
The shelves are all from IKEA. The glass cabinets as well. They are surprisingly sturdy and hold the books well. Thanks for looking at the pics!

I liked Shawn’s, the display and organization. But I gotta go with my heart and vote for Tommy. Yo Joe!

Tommy has the toys and the collection diversity: Point Tommy.

Hands down Shawn. Love both, but Shawn has a hell of collection of comics and comic art. The werewolf by night 32 didn’t hurt either

Shawn. without question.

Shawn wins it.

Tommy gets my point. His personality comes through with the various action figures, games, and comics. Shawn’s is amazing too. Definitely getting ideas for my man cave!!

Excellent taste. Classy. Every statue is picked out with a specific location in mind. Every comic nicely displaced. Very good taste in artists…including Norm Breyfogle ( one of my fave Batman Artists of all time, his batman physique was the ideal standard in my books) I have that same comic, it was one of my first Batman (Detective) comics too!

Thank you so much for sharing this. wow.

I like both of them, but I voted Shawns, since it is easily the best collection I have seen in MY LIFE! WOW, DUDE! Seriously! As much as I like the charm of 80s nostalgia, Shawns collection is almost flawless.
It really does help that he displays his books, art and statues in exactly the same way I do in my living room, with the difference that his room is larger and he has at least double as many statues as I have.
I love how clean everything looks and that its not cluttered, but all displayed in a very modern and grown up cool way.
I will find myself a camera in the next few days and make a few pictures of my collection, so you guys can see what I mean by the similarities, but I have to admit that it won’t be as impressive as this one.
Wow, Shawn! Sunds silly but this is an inspiration, man! As soon as I cann afford a bigger flat after college I will try to emulate that. Great display, man!

i like them both, but i have to vote for Shawn’s… Because… More Books!

HAHA, I love the GI Joe action figures… Those really do look like the originals! :)

The Pin Ball Machines are a nice touch as well.

It was a tough call, but I went with Shawn, just because I’m more inclined towards trades and hardcovers than action figures. Tommy has some incredible stuff, though. The arcade games and the 9.8 Walking Dead 1 are things I’d love to have. I also love how the G.I. Joe figures are displayed. I’d be very proud to have either collection.

Question for Shawn, who is the artist on that Batman/Clayface piece? Looks awesome.

Thanks for looking and for the comments Genghis Frog. The Batman/Clayface piece was done by Tom Fowler. His work has been seen on Mysterious the Unfathomable, Venom and others.

GenghisFrog,

Thanks for the kind words. I got the Walking Dead #1 when it first came out and my good buddy Shawn got it graded for me last Wizard World.

Tommy

oh yeah, i forgot – both are extremely awesome, and honestly I’d want both.
The manseum leading into the hidden mancave.

I went with Shawn’s collection. The original art and statues are way cool, and the whole display is just really slick. Despite what my wife says, you sir, are an inspiration! Tommy, I really dig your arcade cabinet and pinball machine. Really good display ideas all around!

WINNER! That’s got to be the greatest setup I’ve ever seen! I like my room, but I’m jealous!

Although both are very awesome…my vote goes to shawn!

Can’t decide. But, how does one display classic He-Man figures without creating a domino effect when they fall over? Or, better yet, how does one get them to balance?

BOTH collections are AWESOME!!!!

I loved Tommy’s tho, because it’s like reliving my childhood! All those awesome vintage toys, I still have some of mine, but there was a mishap many MANY moons ago that cost me a bulk of my Transformers, T-cats and Joes…

Great collections!!! I’m sure it MUST be that Chicago connection! ;D

Nick~

Both are great, Tommy snuck a Bucky O’Hare on the shelf…very nice! THe budgets are clearly very different for each collection so I don’t think its fair to compare them head to head. Nice work though on both sides.

Keep my name out!!

Shawn’s room all the way! Sorry Thomas!

Shawn wins!

Shawn’s room is off the charts. Organization, presentation and just overall wow factor. FTW!!

Give me the idol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Phoenix and to all the rest for the kind words and taking the time to checkout Shawn’s and my collections. Please feel free to visit me over at my Blog at culturedzombie.com or follow me on twitter at https://twitter.com/CulturedZ0mbie for some more vintage toy fun!

Thanks,
Tommy

The first pic alone made me go for Shawn.

I vote for Shawn

I’m with Tommy; the Mer-Man mask is awesome!

Both awesome collections. Probably amongst the best ever featured on shelf porn. It puts my own collection to shame, making me not want to submit my own shelf porn.

I can’t say I have a favourite as I love both toys and comics, statues and original and they’re both amazing collections.

Shawn Is there anywhere where you have posted scans of your original art?

Thanks for the comments Seany T. I have not posted any scans of the artwork but am looking to do so. Any suggestions?

Hey Shawn,

Comicartfans.com is a pretty good place to post scans of your collection. It’s great for seeing some amazing artwork and sourcing more pieces for your collection. It has a good community spirit with everyone generally pretty friendly and willing to answers questions about where and how they got commissions and original pages.
