‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Saga’ lead Harvey Award nominations

hawkeye1Hawkeye and Saga lead the ballot for the 2013 Harvey Awards, tying with nominations in seven categories, including best new series, best continuing series, best writer (for both Matt Fraction and Brian K. Vaughan) and best artist (for both David Aja and Fiona Staples).

ROBOT 6 was nominated for best biographic, historical or journalistic presentation, alongside Alter Ego Magazine, Jack Kirby Collector, Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson’s and Marvel Comics: The Untold Story.

Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, the cartoonist and founding editor of MAD magazine, the awards are selected entirely by creators. Voting is open now through Aug. 19. The winners will be presented Sept. 7 during Baltimore Comic-Con.

I think these nominations are much, much better than the Eisners this year. I would’ve liked to see Dean White or Bettie Breitweiser in for Best Colorist but other than that, I’ve no real complaints.

I have such regret for not picking up Revival.

Only big problem is the absence of Jordie Bellaire. Who colours everything and does a fantastic job. And for some reason got completely missed.

Any conversation about Best Colorist that doesn’t involve Dean White is null and void, imo.

Not that the other people on the list don’t deserve to be there. It’s just Dean is awesome.

No nominations for Cliff Chiang’s art on Wonder Woman? Joe Prado’s coloring on Aquaman? Everybody’s everything on all of IDW’s Transformers books (easily the best things on the stands, especially Guido Guidi’s excellent retro-style covers on Regeneration One). Hawkeye ranges from okay to terrible. It certainly doesn’t deserve all this praise. I think it’s just the book’s indie-like quality and meme-ability coupled with Hawkeye’s underdog fan base from the recent Avengers movie. Batman, likewise, is overrated, but is at least consistently readable, but it’s been downhill since the Court of Owls.

Oh, and Deadpool #9 deserves something for being the funniest thing I’ve read so far this year.

Some excellent choices there! And congrats to Robot 6, the most varied and fun comics strand around.

Has anyone looked into the decision process behind allowing a duo to be nominated in the Best Cartoonist category?
