The zombie hordes won’t be stopped by the gates of academia.

AMC, Instructure and the University of California, Irvine have teamed up for a massive open online course (MOOC) “exploring a broad range of scholarly topics through the lens of a hypothetical zombie apocalypse.” Or should that be “hypothetical” zombie apocalypse?

Announced this morning, “Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC’s The Walking Dead is a free, eight-week course taught by UC Irvine faculty in the fields of social sciences, public health, physics and astronomy, and mathematics. According to the course description, the online class will tackle such topics as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, social orders and structures, the spread of infectious diseases, and nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world (particularly relevant to Daryl Dixon, the latter asks, “Are squirrels really good for you?”).

Worldwide enrollment is now open; the course begins Monday, Oct. 14, the day after the Season 4 premiere of The Walking Dead, and continues for eight consecutive Mondays through Dec. 2.

The course description states: “Each week we’ll watch engaging lectures, listen to expert interviews, watch exclusive interviews with cast members talking about their characters, use key scenes from the show to illustrate course learning, read interesting articles, review academic resources, participate in large and small group discussions, and — of course — test our learning with quizzes. We recommend that you plan on spending about two (2) to four (4) hours per week on this course, though we believe the course is compelling enough you’ll want to spend more time.”

I just applied to this program! I’m a semi-prepper, but I’d love to study and “be around” other people who would love to learn about the mechanics of society in the event of an actual Zombie apocalypse.

This is so weird but so cool. I’m a Walking Dead fanatic and so I’ll have to sign up for this class. Imho I think The Walking Dead has one of the bedst casts on television.Has anyone on here seen Boondock Saints? I found it looking at Norman Reedus’ Imdb. I just saw a new Indie flick with Reddus in it called “Hello Herman.” Similar themes as “Elephant” from Gus van Sant or maybe even a little reminiscent of “Silence of the Lambs” if you’ve seen that. You can watch the whole movie online here: http://www.hellohermanthemovie… Norman Reedus is one of my favorite actors of all time, if you’re a fan of his or cinema in general you should check it out.
