Hello and welcome to Shelf Porn! Today’s shelves come from Roberto Alves from Madeira Island, an artist who sent us pictures of his comics, original art and more.

If you’d like to see your collection featured here on Shelf Porn, check out the submission instructions for complete details.

And now let’s hear from Roberto …

*****

My name is Roberto Macedo Alves and I am an Artist and Serial Entrepreneur in Madeira Island, a beautiful and small island part of the Portuguese Republic.

Most of my Shelf Porn stuff is in a big room that I use as a studio, to draw and read when I have time.

I’ve been collecting comics since I was 4 years old (my first comic is from 1979) and never stopped.

I was never a fan of putting comics in boxes, I prefer to have all the comics vertically on shelves, for easier classification:

Here is the drawing table, facing the big comics shelf, with a copy of the “WALLY WOOD’S 22 PANELS THAT ALWAYS WORK” for guiding and inspiration:

SP02

For sentimental reasons, I also keep here my first and second Macs and the old typewriter I used to write my first stories, when I was 8:

Near the drawing table, there are shelves with the “How to draw” books, the “Modern Masters” and other relevant books about drawing and art:

A “V” Mask signed by David Lloyd, Action Figures, Heroclix figures, Artist’s Editions and a photo of the beach are all part of the collection:

Nice Colecction!
And that X-Man is a +10 :D.

Books galore, love the Calvin and Hobbes collection.

Great collection. Looks like a fun space to plunk down on the couch and read comics all day.

Olá Roberto!!!!!!!!! :DDDDDDDDD

Fellow Portuguese here!!!! How unbelievably oh-SO-AWESOME to find another Portuguese at CBR and ROBOT 6! :)) Great collection there!

Guys, by the by, I can’t recommend you enough to check José Carlos Fernande’s stuff; he’s an amazing Portuguese comics creator, both as a writer and as an artist. Bet you’ll love his books.

Grande Abraço, Roberto, Tudo de Bom pá!!!! :DDDD

cool collection including having a V mask signed. plus love all the art work too.

Great stuff.

What Frenz art do you have? I love his work.

Nice collection!

Good stuff. Recommend picking up Bernie Wrightson’s ” A Look Back” and a copy of The Studio to add to your collection! Looks overwhelming, hopefully you know where everything is.
Best-MK

I’m crying it’s so beautiful

Hello Nissus, Chilli sauce, Kevin Brennan:
Thank you for the nice comments, I am indeed a fan of X-man, and spend lots of time on the sofa reading (and drawing)!

OLÁ JÚLIO! Great to see a fellow portuguese fan here!
Thank you for the great comment. I agree with Júlio and recommend the work of Portuguese Artist José Carlos Fernandes (who unfortunately retired from comics creation). Every book he published is also part of my collection :)
GRANDE ABRAÇO! JÚLIO! Vamos falando por estes lados!

demoncat4, Eric thank you sop much :D

poor college kid, I used to be a poor college kid too. Hopefully, things get better :D

Boabiemenzies, I have pages from his SPIDER-GIRL drawn by Frenz. :)

Mike K, Thank you for the recommendation, I will try to find the Bernie Wrightson’s ” A Look Back”
(I am still able to find everything – the comics are identified with boards signalling the collection title) – that makes it easier.

Bravo! A fantastic collection!

A work of art in itself. Bravo!

Nice to see a fellow countryman displaying his stuff in here. Beautiful comics den doubling as a workplace. Must be hard to have any work done surrounded by so many distractions.

I got a laugh at seeing those old Brazilian editions. I was sure i was the only one around these parts who still kept some of those awful looking (by today’s standards) editions. I’ve replaced a lot of those by American originals or trades over the years, but i still have quite a few, partially because i still haven’t replaced the stories, bul also for nostalgia sake. Seeing some of your exemplars on display, triggered a sting of regret for getting rid of all my Monica’s Gang issues.

Grande abraço para ti e para todos os Tugas que seguem o CBR

As someone who’s trying to learn Portuguese, what exactly is out there that I might be able to acquire? I’m already buying the Private Eye in Portuguese online, but what’s the printed material market like? I know Blacksad has a Portuguese version… are there other highlights? And are there any great book dealer sites who’d ship to North America?

Obrigado!

Love the shelving. Awesome room.

Hello, Michael Hoskin:

You have lots of stuff in Portuguese: Not many comics (“floppies”), but there are some translated Marvel TPBs (DAREDEVIL: YELLOW, WOLVERINE: ENEMY OF THE STATE), the early volumes of THE WALKING DEAD, SIN CITY, HELLBOY, DEATH NOTE and NARUTO.

There are also very good portuguese translations of BLACKSAD, CORTO MALTESE graphic Novels by Hugo Pratt, and ASTERIX.

And then you have the original portuguese stuff, like the amazing work of JOSÉ CARLOS FERNANDES and ROBERTO GOMES. You have to see both to understand their brilliance.

You can order the portuguese stuff @ my comics shop: setimadimensao.com (http://blog.setimadimensao.com/?page_id=2).

Fifolet:
I never had the courage to get rid of those early awful looking brazilian editions. I have all those stories in english TPBs, but never got rid of the tiny badly-printed brazilian editions. And I still keep my Monica’s Gang issues. For nostalgia sake :)

Grande abraço para ti também. É bom ver que afinal há muitos portugueses que seguem o CBR

I should stop checking out Shelf Porn. It’s making me sad looking at my own collection.

Nah … who am i kidding? I’ll be coming back for more of this.
