Axel-In-Charge: Facing the 'Divided' Marvel NOW! Future
In what is sure to be a paper-saving initiative, Marvel Comics will offer copies of its Marvel Previews catalogue on the Marvel Comics Digital App beginning November 6. A digital download of the catalogue will also come bundled with any digital download code in the publisher’s print comics. It will transition to a free download for all users the month its contents are on sale.
Marvel is currently the only publisher to have a catalogue separate from the massive monthly tome of Diamond Previews, the catalogue from which retailers can plan which issues and products they plan to order. Previews contains solicitations for products set to hit in three months, giving retailers and fans an advanced — if somewhat ambiguous — look at what to expect in the coming months. Marvel Previews is available free with purchase of the main Previews catalogue, or for $1.99 by itself.
Providing Marvel Previews free of charge in the digital format is a great move by the publisher, and will likely help inform more casual readers of Marvel’s upcoming story arcs and initiatives. After all, not every reader keeps up with comics news or hunts down the publisher’s advance solicitations every month. Plus, the November debut for the initiative likely isn’t a coincidence. The All-New Marvel NOW! series announced at New York Comic Con last weekend will begin in January — the exact month the November 6 issue of Marvel Previews will highlight.
“The goal is to aid comic shops, retailers and fans.” Marvel’s SVP of Publishing David Gabriel said via press release. “By putting information about new print products and collected editions in the hands of our growing digital customer base, we can inform those customers about the great Marvel products available at their local retailers!”
The November 6 issue of Marvel Previews contains solicits for “All-New Marvel NOW! Point One” #1, “Inhuman” #1, “Avengers World” #1 and more.
