The end, as Marvel intones, starts in February with The Superior Spider-Man #27.NOW, which begins Otto Octavius’ battle against Green Goblin and the New York City underworld in Dan Slott and Guiseppe Camuncoli’s “Goblin Nation.” “Win or lose,” the solicitation text teases, “this shall be Otto’s greatest battle.”

The publisher has provided ROBOT 6 with an exclusive three-page preview of the issue, which you can see below.

I am so ready for 2014! Bring on Goblin Nation!

The question remains: Who’s under the mask?

– The most obvious answer would be Norman. That’s too obvious though.

– Slott could go with Harry, but that lacks some creative punch.

– It could be Peter in Otto’s body. We know that Ock’s body was discovered missing AFTER Green Goblin reappeared, but we have no idea when it was taken. It could as well have been before GG’s appearance. As for Peter being in the body… Otto has had these spider-bots roaming around the city. He may have purged Peter from his own mind, but what if the bots were carrying Peter in their collective code like a virus. For all we know, Peter could have found his way to the only available body, Otto’s. Being “mostly dead” might have driven him mad, leading him to take on the GG personality and seek revenge on Otto. It’s a long shot, but still.

Man, I hate Spidey-Ock with such a passion, but I love this book. Very excited for this arc. Say what you will abt Slott, but he does a Claremont-esque job of juggling long-running plot points and the payoffs are very satisfying.

I used to think it could be Peter under the Goblin mask, until the last issue. Torturing Carlie and giving her goblin serum is something Peter would never do, no matter what the cause.

This art is so much better than Humberto Ramos’. Some fantastic looking panels.

Otto Octavio? I’m pretty sure it’s Otto Octavius.

Guiseppe Camuncoli usually isnt my cup of tea but man do those pictures look pretty.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to care about this. This isn’t Spiderman. It’s the guy who murdered Spiderman and is now wearing his body like a cheap suit. I’ve pretty much given up no Marvel at this point, mainly because Marvel editorial seems to just have so much contempt for the idea of actual “heroism.” Although, it would be hilarious if at some point they go back and explain that the Red Skull did to Captain America the exact same thing that Ock did to Peter. It would certainly explain Cap’s characterization over the last few years.

Really looking forward to this.

You have a good imagination Rob; this is a cool theory –

I see at least two ways for Peter to eventually come back, neither involving the spider-bots.

(Possible spoliers, through issue 23)

1. In the recent issue where Ock is trying desperately reviewing all his memories to try and solve the vibranium formula to prevent Horizon from blowing up, in silhouette along the bottom of the page we see images of Spider-Man digging himself out from rubble, rising from the grave as it were. Maybe this isn’t a metaphor; maybe its was Peter slowly clawing his way back into consciousness, thanks to Ock’s reviewing of the memories (technically, his memories of Peter’s memories.)

2. The body is of course missing, and according to the “rules of the game” established early on, anywhere where Peter’s memories can potentially hold his consciousness. The big question is, where is the body, and is it salvageable (or already salvaged?) It seems like the Goblin Nation is the most likely candidate, and its possible that they were hoping to revive Ock (but now they have Carlie’s diary, so..)

On the contrary, they aren’t portraying Ock as an unmitigated, celebrated hero. I have some quibbles, but for the most part they are doing a good job exploring the idea of whether this ends-justifies-the-means behavior constitutes heroic behavior. Ock thinks he’s a superior hero, but ever since issue 3 we’ve seen the reaction of those around him, and it’s not flattering.

It occurred to me recently that SSM has replaced “Parker luck” with “Otto blowback”. Virtually everything that goes wrong for Otto is a side-effect of something he did earlier. He’s spinning plates, and he keeps adding one more, and a lot of the tension is expecting the whole lot to come crashing down on him. And given how he got this job, it really does feel like anything can happen. It’s a refreshing change from episodic tales that can be read in any order.

Yes, I expect Parker will come back eventually. And not because of fan outcry, but because they planned this arc out years ahead of time.

Incidentally, I find it interesting that noone is complaining about what’s been done to Doc Ock. Ironically, his change seems more permanent than Parker’s death. I can’t see them rebooting him to restore the status quo. I suppose they could reveal he has a son who “takes up arms” (ha!) to avenge his father, or something. :-)

Could the new goblin be Vin Gonzalez?

The SUPERIOR Spider-Man

I really think it would be stupid if Mr. Slott gets SpOck to be beaten up by the Goblin, and then maybe even killed, causing Peter to come back and defeat him. That would really be complete crap.

What I would like is for Otto to defeat Goblin after a long hard battle, but then to realize that he was never the SUPERIOR Spider-Man, and, due to his new (somewhat) heroic nature, he returns Peter back to his body, as he thinks that Pete would do a better job of being Spidey (à la the recent SSM Team Up issue).

IMO, that would really make it for me, as it would make Otto look good, and show that villains CAN actually be redeemed, while also bringing poor Pete back! Win-Win situation!!

Well, that’s my awesome theory! :D

Well, I would love for there to be some craziness and have Parker back. Buuuuuuuuut, I think Spider-Man will be the 2099 spidey with the ‘2099’ dropped. ( remember, he’s in the 616 as an intern for his grand pappy) whatever is going on, if freaking fantastic! Can’t wait to see the result of this Superior Venom thing too…

This story actually never happened. Peter Parker contracted a virus when he was with the Fantastic Four. While in a coma and left under the medical care of the replacement FF, the Superior Spider-Man story is what Parker has imagined Doc Ock will do to him. Peter will awake from his medical condition one week before the actual events of Amazing Spider-Man #698 take place and defeat Doc Ock… since Peter was never in a coma, but floating through an alternate dimension where he could see future events unfold. Doc Ock will never have been Superior and Peter’s world will be the same… except that he finds out he’s still married to MJ ;)

it could be the Gray Goblin, remember Gabriel. He might be under the mask, and the scar of the glider could be some make up. Plus when Hob Goblin made fun of Harry, Green Goblin said” Don’t say that about my…”, so it is still not fully proven if it is Norman.
