Quote of the Day | Super-fan Jerry Seinfeld on ‘Man of Steel’

“I was so happy that they made another Superman movie! I’m really reluctant to be critical of it in any way. But I thought the glossing over of the figuring out a secret identity and why he felt he needed one was a huge missed opportunity for that character, and one of the most interesting things about Superman is the whole secret identity. So to me it was too much action/violence and not enough character study.”

— comedian, and famously die-hard Superman fan, Jerry Seinfeld, addressing director Zack Snyder’s divisive Man of Steel in a Reddit AMA

I’d agree with that.

And the last one was all character study and everyone claims it was terrible.

Fair enough! I missed the secret identity, too.

Geno, it wasn’t the character study stuff that tanked Superman Returns, it was the lack of a narrative arc and the Superman has a kid idea. The latter just felt half-baked, and might have worked in a more structured movie.

For the most part, I agree with his comments.

On the other hand, for the first time in the history of… well, ever, we got a Lois Lane who isn’t a complete imbecile.

I like the quote. It had its good parts and its bad parts. Overall it left enough to grow a cinematic world.

Man of Steel was by far my least favorite Hollywood film that I saw in 2013. There was no drama whatsoever, no humor, no sense of irony, no fun. I’m done with Snyder – I have no interest in seeing any more of his movies.

Yup….he’s 100% correct.

@Steve: I don’t know. Smallville has its critics, but a lot agree that Erica Durance pretty much nailed the role as Lois Lane. Smart, perky… and hey, she even figured out that Clark was Superm—… er, the Red and Blue Blur. Amy Adams was less of an ace reporter and more of a “right place at the right time” type of character. Was there a reason Zod took her aboard his space ship? Not really.

@Mr_Wayne – At first I thought your 2nd and 3rd sentences were still commenting on the quote and i was humored.

@Dave – I think there was drama in the film, but I would agree that it could have been done better. I felt the flash backs with Costner were pretty moving. I know not everyone liked the way they portrayed Pa Kent, but I thought those sections were the only real emotional elements. I do agree that Snyder’s movies seem to lack in…. Joy? Happiness? almost completely.

I’d wondered if any new writer had ever thought up a device for Superman to make up a mask to cloak his face ie. Mission Impossible or something akin to that to overcome the older device of just putting on glasses, which seems a bit of a leap for a modern sensibility.

Because Superman is the SECRET identity. He’s not disguising himself as Clark. Clark Kent is who he IS. He just can’t stop being Clark after 30 years.

Which makes him such a great foil for Batman as Bruce Wayne is his disguise.
