The British Library has debuted new art by Jamie Hewlett created for “Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the U.K.,” the largest comics exhibition to date in the United Kingdom.

Running from May 2 to Aug. 14, “Comics Unmasked” traces the history of British comic books, from the 19th century to the present, exploring how they’ve addressed such subjects as violence, sexuality and drugs while breaking boundaries.

The art by Hewlett, which depicts a costumed woman brandishing brass knuckles and a flask after defeating her foe, will appear on nationwide posters for the exhibition  and as a nearly 20-foot-tall installation at the Library. A second image, below, features two alien-looking figures at the same location.

The exhibition will feature original artwork and a video montage of Hewlett’s co-creations Tank Girl and Gorillaz.

“There is no national institution better than the British Library to showcase such an extensive collection of British comic art,” he said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be part of this exhibition, and to celebrate the history of British comics.”
