This is the way Wolverine ends: Not with a bang but a hologram

When Marvel sends Logan to meet his maker in September, it will do so in grand style — grand ’90s style — with a “Weapon Etched Holo Foil” cover for each of the four issues in the Death of Wolverine miniseries. If nothing else, you have to give the publisher credit for “Weapon Etched.” (Get it?)

“When Steve McNiven first turned in his cover to Death of Wolverine #1, we knew we had something special in our hands,” Executive Editor Mike Marts said in a statement. “A cover for the ages. What better way to celebrate this special cover than by giving it the special treatment. Just the other day I saw the process involved in creating this amazing cover — it’s really beautiful. It’s a fantastic way to enhance and showcase this spectacular cover that Steve has drawn.”

Marvel’s assertion that each holo foil cover will be “a sight to behold” is perhaps undercut by the J.J. Abrams-style lens flare effect applied to the previously released McNiven image.

In any case, because of the longer time required to produce the hologram covers, retailers will have to place their orders earlier than for standard comics. Orders placed before FOC will be honored.

Contacted this morning for clarification about pricing and whether the holo covers are standard or variants, Marvel told ROBOT 6 that more information will be included in September solicitations.

Illustrated by McNiven and written by Charles Soule, the four-issue, weekly Death of Wolverine  explores what happens when the character’s foes discover he’s been surviving without his mutant healing factor for the past year. The first issue arrives Sept. 3.

Sigh…. Marvel….. I love you….. But u are addicted to cheap marketing ploys that only work in the short term. Time to stage an intervention.

This isn’t really a Marvel specific problem. DC is arguably worse. It’s one of the things I love most about reading everything digitally, I am completely shielding from these bullshit practices. But really the worst part of it is that they keep doing it because people keep buying them. Therein lies the problem.

At least he wont be shoe horned into avengers stories anymore. Killing off basically the only major canadian super hero in marvel is kind of lame. Wolverine isnt a mask where someone can take his place like Batman or Captain America so expect him back very soon. Seriously he’s gone to hell, im sure death wont last long like Jean Grey.

Yes, both companies milk their characters for all their worth until their worthless. I highly recommend watching the youtube video called The Death and Return of Superman by Jonathan Brandis which stars elijah wood, mandy moore, ron howard, some famous online personalities and a few porn stars. Its hilarious to watch them explain how badly the story was done and how much of a money grab it was.

Avengers blow, X-Men forever.

No ‘name’ character stays dead more than about two years these days…
