Alex Ross debuts new X-Men, Captain America art for Comic-Con

Art dealer Sal Abbinanti has unveiled two new Alex Ross lithographs that will be available next month at Comic-Con International.

Ross, who’s been reaching back into Marvel history for a series of variant covers celebrating the publisher’s 75th anniversary, here depicts the 1970s X-Men lineup and a fairly timeless Captain America. The renowned artist recently tackled both subjects in a pair of variants, capturing Xavier’s first students in a later era.

“I recognized with this opportunity that I could do that original group as they were costumed when Neal Adams drew them,” Ross explained to Comic Book Resources. “It was more fun than I’d ever expected, and it allowed me to scratch an itch I never did before. For all the times I’ve drawn them, I’d never explored that period. I was either doing their earlier costumes or the All-New, All-Different X-Men.”

Comic-Con International will be held July 24-27 in San Diego.

Cuz it is so rare that Alex Ross paints anything that isn’t originally from the Silver Age, it’s a real treat to see him paint something different, like the All-New X-Men line up. I wish I could see him do more modern interpretations of characters, like that one Guardians of the Galaxy cover.

Generic poses, as usual.

Alex Ross rules!

Imagine if he did a painted X-Men miniseries! That would sell off the charts numbers man!

Anything this man paints is golden.

Love that Cap. He looks like someone you don’t want to mess with!

I used to love Alex Ross but he’s a really boring artist

Why does anyone get excited for Alex Ross’ work?
Everything is so static and boring, and all looks so similar.

Maybe because he is the best in this genre of illustration? Not everyone is into the Powerpuff Girls, you know.

so nice to see Cap without the stupid helmet, nose guard, and chin strap

As much as I haven’t been enjoying the ongoings lately, I’d love to see Alex Ross paint the Wolverine side of the Schism, aka the “real” X-Men. His interpretations of modern Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Rogue, Psylocke, Gambit and Rachel would be epic.

Not much for Ross’ art myself, but his cap is really, really good. I could do without the bullets deflecting off the shield, but that’s a fine piece he’s made.

I love Alex Ross’s art, but what kind of shirt is Cyclops wearing that digs into the crevices between his pectorals?

The Captain America is classic Ross. But something just looks off about that X-Men pic. Colossus has the Ross shine, and Wolverine looks par, but Storm looks more, I don’t know, Hildebrant-ish? Wth is Cyclops wearing? And Nightcrawler is just weird.

I love Ross’ stuff, but the X-Men pic looks weird. Cyke’s chest looks weird (that’s probably the tightest shirt I’ve ever seen) and Jean’s arm looks weird. I was actually looking for Sunfire at first. Also, Storm’s face looks under-detailed.

Other than that, though, looks great, especially Cap.

That X-Men pic is actually really poor for Alex Ross standards. it just looks so dated now!

Is it just me, or does the X-Men picture look out of focus?
