NSFW Spider-Man statue removed after arousing complaints

Sometimes your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man can get a bit too friendly. Case in point: the sculpture of the wall-crawler by Eunsuk Yoo that was (ahem) erected last year at the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan, South Korea.

As you can see from the decidedly not-safe-for-work photos below, courtesy of Kotaku, Peter Parker’s spider-sense isn’t the only thing tingling. However, despite the seemingly unmissable presence of Spider-Man’s amazing friend, the sculpture apparently dangled above the mall’s playground and rest area for about a year before it drew negative attention.

Given the choice to either do something about Spidey’s web-shooter — darn that Parker luck! — or remove the sculpture entirely, the artist chose the latter.

“It was OK for about a year and now it has to be taken down due a sudden interest in the piece, which is sad,” he wrote last week in a Facebook post translated by a Kotaku reader. “But I understand that a piece that could be potentially interpreted as lewd can be offensive at a place like shopping mall. It’s disappointing, but I’ll reach out to the public with a better work next time.”

Ostensibly, the mall had to approve it, right?

BWAHAHAHAH! That’s an awesome sculpture. :p

i’m hard for mall-sourced commerce!

How did it stay up for a year? *rimshot*

Sensational wordplay in this article!

Holy priapism, Batman!

With great penis comes great responsibility.

I thought you were suppose to call a doctor after four hours?! Not a whole year, there may be perminant damage.

That’s clearly a statue of Spider-Man AND Sue Storm

WTF is wrong with South Korea???
removed after a year?? really??? no one noticed???

I don’t understand the concept behind the statute in the first place.

This is brilliant. I love South Korea. You guys give them too much hard time.

I am guessing from those angles that Peter Parker is not Jewish

..or the contrary, depends on where you stand

This is totally nuts why would the artist even sculpt Spidey and Peter together doesn’t he know he has a secret identity to protect?

Ok joking aside this is stupid and offensive to Spider-Man fans everywhere. (oh and the kids too I guess)

Three words: JAMESON WAS RIGHT.

Weirdly, I sorta think I know what the artist was going for. Statues of naked people are in public all the time, and they decorate park fountains and some of the greatest works of art in history. And, if anyone’s ever worn spandex, you know that it’s going to follow every contour of your body. So the conundrum the statue presents: it is both a fully clothed figure, but it’s also obscene. But somehow more obscene than, say, the naked statue of Mercury that’s at the entrance of the town park?

I was all “what’s wrong with that?”

I took a closer look.

/sigh

@Larry Cruz

Yeah, but those statues are sporting wood with the proportionate strength of a spider. Nude is one thing, armed for bear is another.

*aren’t.

lol

Black Cat somewhere nearby then?

Looks to me like Spidey is about to urinate in “Spectacular” fashion.

“But I understand that a piece that could be potentially interpreted as lewd can be offensive at a place like shopping mall.

“…could be potentially interpreted as lewd…” lol nice one dude, as if if it’s other peoples fault that they’re offended by Spidey and lil’ spidey on full display.

What would make the situation even more awkward is if Doc Ock showed up.

And now, something for the ladies.

MJ, you’re about to hit the jackpot!

Why is he hard? It´s stupid. A sexy bulge should be better. Hahahahahahahaha.

It took them a year to decide the sculpture was not well hung… ?

It took them a year?! How was this approved at all?!

A slight bulge would’ve been fine, but this? Just… What has been seen can never been unseen.

At first I thought, “what could be so NSFW about Spider-Man?” and then I saw the pictures. I’m surprised the artist didn’t ask to put a sprinkler in there and make it functional.

Come on, like Spider-Man never had an accidental erection while fighting crime off panel LOL. I can just imagine the embarrassment and his internal dialog when it happens.

Maybe Doc Cock took over his body

Parker’s peter
