2014 Eisner Award winners announced

eisnerawards_logoGilbert and Jaime Hernandez won their first Eisner Awards — for Best Short Story and Best Writer/Artist, for Love and Rockets: New Stories #6 — during a ceremony held last night in conjunction with Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples led the evening, with wins for Best Continuing Series, Best Writer and Best Painter/Multimedia Artist. The Wake by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja, Richard Stark’s Parker: Slayground by Darwyn Cooke, and Genius Illustrated, designed by Dean Mullaney, were also recognized in multiple categories.

Comic Book Resources won its third Eisner for Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism.

In addition, Hayao Miyazaki, Alan Moore, Dennis O’Neil and Bernie Wrightson were inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, joining Irwin Hasen, Sheldon Moldoff and Orrin C. Evans, who were selected earlier by the judges. The Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comics Writing went to Robert Kanigher, Bill Mantlo and Jack Mendelsohn, while Aaron Conley was named as recipient of the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award. Legend Comics & Coffee in Omaha, Nebraska, and All Star Comics in Melbourne, Australia, were the winners of the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

Concerned comic fan

How was Batman by Snyder and Capullo not even nominated for one award? Zero Year should have won story of the year without a doubt. So I guess if a comic is actually popular and sells well then I has no chance of winning an Eisner. It’s because the voters are a bunch of stuck up pretentious blow hards who give comic fans a bad name. Here’s an idea, let’s let the fans vote on the awards so we can see who really deserves to win.

Fans vote with their dollars. Awards are given out every month in the form of royalty checks – or not. Eisners are industry awards. Batman has been great, as evident in its topping sales charts every month. Like the film industry does with some awards, the comic industry is choosing to recognize what it sees as great within itself. Relax, enjoy Batman all you want, and choose not to buy or give credence to any of the work that actually was recognized by the Eisners. But Snyder’s work was represented there, wasn’t it? Man, the people who make comics must actually have no idea what makes a good comic. Being pretentious blowhards, they obviously don’t know who really deserves to win, like a concerned comic fan would.

Pretty much no surprise about Saga. For mainstream comics, really only Hawkeye, East of West and the Wake were its competition.

Jordie Bellaire won but that is no surprise given she is literally on everything ;)

First ever award for LosBros Hernandez, seriously what is wrong with this industry.

Trillium should have won. The Wake has fallen apart thes last 3-4 issues

With so many great books out there, it’s hard to pick a winner. I even got to vote this year and it was no easy task. And for the concerned fan, as much as I love Snyder and Capullo’s Batman, and I think it should have gotten a nod, these other books are popular and they sure do sell. Saga is definitely my best seller.

And congrats to CBR. Definitely my favorite comic site.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. Yes, I was surprised that this was the first for Los Bros Hernandez. Long time coming.

I’m very happy that Fiona won this year and I can’t fault the jury for the winners in Continuing Serie and New Serie, Saga and Sex Criminals would have been my vote too ( and Best New Serie next year will be Southern Bastards, mark my word).
That being said, Snyder’s Batman is indeed great too and deserves the sales it is getting but I understand and agree with the jury’s choices.

Yeah all of these are understandable choices! Personally I would have picked Colder over The Wake, and Hip Hop Family Tree over The Fifth Beatle — but those are personal preferences. Total bummer that Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake didn’t win the lettering category since that’s lettered soooo beautiful, but what can you do. Glad to see Faith Erin Hicks, Paul Pope (Battling Boy) and the Oatmeal snag a prize each.
Gotta say though, a lot of the nominees and winners I haven’t even read. Really appreciate the Eisner’s spotlighting work outside of the main publishers!

Lastly, congrats CBR! Could’ve definitely seen Comics & Cola win that category, but I guess it’s less journalistic and a more specific taste of comics? Would’ve been a deserved win too, in my view. But congrats. :)

Yeah, it makes total sense for Jordie Bellaire – who worked on nearly every book except the books that actually won – to win over Matt Hollingsworth – who actually worked on winning books… Quantity shouldn’t win over quality.

Murphy is superior to Capullo both technically and stylistically. I can’t wait to see more of his Batman. The ’27’ was nice. I guess Aja’s Pizza Dog was a no-brainer. I actually preferred Francavillas fill-ins, but, they weren’t as strong done-in-ones. And whereas Aja is more or less done with Hawkeye, Francesco has a ton of work where he is bound to scoop up awards. Eisners are more for original comics. I kinda think Lazarus should have won or got some more nods. Andre the Giant must not have made cut-off. That, and Afterlife for Archie.

I agree with PietroMaximoff, but I’m happy del Mondo was nominated anyway.

‘Goddam This War!’ by Jacques Tardi and Jean-Pierre Verney is already on my wishlist.

I kind of want to complain about the Best New Series category, but there are so many creator-driven titles these past couple of years that deserved a nod, I don’t know if it would be worth it. I dropped ‘Sex Criminals’ after the first arc, but I understand why people think it’s decent book. I just preferred ‘Trillium.’

Speaking of the burgeoning landscape of creator-driven books, I’m fully expecting Image Comics to pop up with more and more titles next year.
