‘Quantum and Woody,’ ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Saga’ lead Harvey ballot

quantum-woody1Quantum and Woody leads the final ballot for the 2014 Harvey Awards with nominations in six categories, including best new series, edging out Hawkeye with five and Saga with four. Quantum and Woody‘s James Asmus also received nods for best writer, most promising new talent and the special award for humor.

Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, the cartoonist and founding editor of MAD magazine, the awards are selected entirely by creators. Online voting is open now through Aug. 18. The winners will be presented Sept. 6 in a ceremony held in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con.

It’s not much of a surprise that they think Pere Perez is a newcomer. His previous work was in mainstream super hero comics.

I cant believe Superior Foes of Spiderman has been ignored. This is one of the most inventive , fun books published.

Probably cause it’s a z-list Marvel comic.

What are the criteria for a new series?

I mean, I suppose Quantum and Woody counts since it’s a new creative team on a rebooted continuity for a property that hasn’t been published since 2000. But presumably you wouldn’t count a Marvel Now book that just relaunched at #1.

Did Prophet get nominated for Best New Series in 2012? It was just as much a new series as Quantum and Woody is, whether the cover said #1 or #21.

I’m very pleased to see that Quantum & Woody is receiving some recognition; it’s been a fantastic series and I think James Asmus is a fine writer with a very bright future.

Going quickly through the nominations I saw Harbinger, Harbinger Wars, Unity, Archer & Armstrong, Quantum and Woody. I’ve been loving the Valiant re-launch, and its nice to see all of these great series getting recognition.

Nice mix of mainstream and indie work. Awesome to see a bunch of nominations for Adventure Time. If Britt Wilson doesn’t win best letterer for Fionna & Cake I will most definitly sulk and think rebellious thoughts! Also lots of love for Six Gun Gorilla which I feel is deserved.
Lastly, has anyone read Spera? It’s on my to-read list but I was under the impression it was one story, not an anthology? Could be wrong of course.

Yes !

Loving Valiant getting some attention. Like many, I’ve said that Valiant is putting out some of the best books. I’ve been enjoying their entire line and am stoked that both Bloodshot and Archer & Armstrong are being developed as movies.

is Hawkeye still being published? i have not seen a new issue for a couple of months now…

I am also very happy with the Valiant love and really hope Fred Van Lente wins the award for humour in comics. His writing is always hilarious, with witty dialogue and scenes and characters which are funny without being contrived. e.g. General Redacted in Archer in Armstrong, the rap-loving robot in Magnus, Robot Fighter and bascially everything about his Taskmaster series from 2012 (especially the Grey Riders) !!

Most of these categories will be really tough calls, but Best New Series is probably the tightest race. Each one is really fantastic in its own way. Great to see Q+W with recognition, hopefully gives people a reason to check out a series that has really kept interesting and funny. Should get some people interested in checking it out.

Awesome to see Valiant get so many nods! In this guy’s humble opinion, Valiant has the most consistent and well run “superhero” universe today. I have never been more stoked for comics than I have with the past 2+ years they have been publishing, and I hope this will entice many on the fence about their work to give it a try!

I find it interesting that Valiant has received so many nominations, yet their sales numbers barely register on the monthly charts, even when one tosses out the dominant figures of Marvel and DC. In addition, they receive very limited news coverage on comic book sites . . . such as this one.

FYI, I myself purchase several Valiant titles on a regular basis, though aside from that I’ve no dog in the fight.
