‘Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine’ virtual-reality teaser leaks

A trailer leaked overnight for Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine, a virtual-reality “experiment” developed by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic’s ILM Experience Lab, which launched last year.

Reportedly appearing only briefly on the ILMxLab website before being removed, the video has since popped up elsewhere (watch it below), revealing footage of the Millennium Falcon landing on Tatooine, followed by Imperial ships and the arrival of R2-D2 to provide the player with a lightsaber to ward off a Stormtrooper attack.

Clearly labeled an “experiment” in the trailer (twice!), Trials on Tatooine comes to life with Valve and HTC’s Vive virtual-reality headset. It’s unclear whether ILMxLab intends this to be any more than an experiment, but CNET’s Sean Hollister — who actually wielded a virtual lightsaber — writes, “I wouldn’t be too surprised it’s never released to the public.”

“The Falcon felt so real for a moment that I tripped over my VR umbilical cord when trying to back away, yanking the headset clean off my face,” he recalls. “The only thing better was the pitch-perfect blue lightsaber, humming away in my hand. It felt powerful, like a living thing and yet simultaneously like an extension of my body. Just how my childhood self used to imagine it.”

ILMxLab is collaborating with Disney Imagineering on the upcoming Millennium Falcon attraction for Disney Parks’ Star Wars theme lands, so it’s certainly possible that if Trials on Tatooine isn’t released to public, we could see elements of it there.

It would be cool if they gave us a choice of what color lightsaber we would like to wield. Some of us prefer the green to the blue.
