The dolls were one of the first images to come to me on the book. In fact, in the earliest version of the outline, Brian and his father were both dollmakers. It was sort of their thing that they shared, and then Brian has to realize that it was something more for his dad. That went away fairly early on, but, the idea of them sharing something so grotesque is what led me down the road of telling the story.
As for the design, I pretty much explained what I wanted and then Rahsan went right ahead and made them a thousand times cooler than I imagined. That’s the joy of collaborating.
