EXCLUSIVE: "Arrow" Brings Back Amy Gumenick as Cupid
Legal | Antarctic Press has agreed to stop selling Diary of a Zombie Kid and Diary of a Zombie Kid: Rotten Rules under the terms of a temporary restraining order issued Wednesday by a federal court. Wimpy Kid Inc. is suing Antarctic for trademark infringement, among other things, claiming that its Diary of a Wimpy Kid parodies are too close to the real thing. Antarctic CEO Joe Dunn signed the temporary restraining order, signifying that Antarctic agreed to it; the two companies are negotiating a settlement, according to court papers. One interesting tidbit: Diary of a Zombie Kid sold all of 850 copies in comics shops in August, while the first printing on the latest Wimpy Kid book was 6 million. [ICv2]
Comics | Bayou Arcana is a new anthology of Southern Gothic horror comics with a gender twist: All the comics are written by men and illustrated by women. There are some pretty broad generalizations in this article — “There is a certain sensitivity that you find in women’s art that just does not appear in a lot of guys’ work,” says the project editor, James Pearson — but the project itself sounds interesting. Retailing | In the wake of the August closing of the Atomic Comics chain, Mesa, Arizona-area retailers are searching for ways to diversify in an attempt to keep their own stores afloat. Mike Banks, owner of Samurai Comics, has even opened a new location next to Atomic’s former flagship store to serve customers who suddenly found themselves without a comics shop. Retailing | The inventory Arizona retail chain Atomic Comics, which abruptly closed its four locations in late August amid the bankruptcy of owner Michael Malve, will be sold at auction
Jan. 3 Jan. 10 in Phoenix, both live and online. Known nationally for its in-store signings, innovative marketing and sheer size, the 23-year-old chain gained international exposure last year when its name and logo were featured prominently in Kick-Ass, the film adaptation of the comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. Photos of the inventory to be liquidated can be found on the website of the auction company. Atomic Comics, the nationally known Arizona retail chain, abruptly closed all four locations on Sunday, shocking staff, customers and industry figures alike. Although the closing of the stores in Mesa, Phoenix, Chandler and Paradise Valley was initially announced last night by multiple employees and creators, owner Michael Malve confirmed the news this morning in an installment of his weekly newsletter titled “My Final Report.”
“As some of you may have already heard, after 25 years of running a successful business, sadly and much to my dismay, I have shut the doors of Atomic Comics,” Malve wrote. “The villain in this tragedy is the economy. I had hoped to be the superhero and triumph over the recession, but sadly the economic downturn of the past 5 years has proven to be unsustainable.”
In the newsletter, which can be read below, Malve revealed he’s filed for bankruptcy, and that he and his family are losing their home, ” as we had secured it against our leases which we obviously have to break.”
“I know there are many people out there facing very similar situations in these difficult times and now I can definitely empathize with them,” he continued. “I have always been and will forever be an extremely optimistic person and will look at this situation as an adventure. I have very high hopes for the next chapter of my life.”
This past weekend Atomic Comics in Arizona welcomed Avengers/Powers writer Brian Michael Bendis to the store for a weekend of meeting fans, eating Chick-Fil-A and teaching a seminar on writing comics. Store owner Mike Malve was kind enough to send over a report from the event, which you can read below.

This past weekend Atomic Comics was honored to host a gigantic comic book personality event: Bendispalooza! Man, what a blast the fans and I had! As owner of Atomic for over 25 years, I’ve hosted many a signing, and was super excited to bring Brian Michael Bendis back to sunny Phoenix AZ. It has been six years since Brian and his friends Joe Quesada and Brian Finch were all at Atomic Comics, so to make this appearance even better, we held a PALOOZA rather than a mere signing.
Festivities kicked off Friday night with a paid comic book and graphic novel writing seminar led by Brian Bendis. I knew Brian currently teaches a regular class at Portland State University and I also knew the boy loves to talk, so I figured it was a natural match. But never in a million years did I think we would attract so many people who happily shelled out $25 to participate in a comic book writing class taught by THE Bendis. (No offense, Brian!) In total we had over 35 paid students for the class, including some who drove all the way from Los Angeles to attend. I think Brian was hoping for ten while I had projected success to be defined by 20. So we were both pleasantly surprised with the turnout. But even better than the numbers was the fact that everyone came prepared and ready to learn. Paper, iPad, pen and laptops in hand, they sat at the tables jotting down every important word that was discussed.
