SDCC ’13 | Duncan Jones & Glenn Fabry to produce ‘Mute’

Mute header

News flows out of Comic-Con International like an avalanche: Sometimes the interesting announcements gets buried by the more glamorous and higher-profile projects. One story that caught my eye was that filmmaker Duncan Jones and 2000AD/Preacher artist Glenn Fabry will be collaborating on a graphic-novel adaptation of Jones’ unproduced script Mute for Dark Horse.

Mute was originally planned to be Jones’ second film, after the much-praised Moon. Failing to secure funding for the ambitious, Blade Runner-influenced, project meant Jones was forced to move on. His second film instead was Source Code, a rollicking adventure that showed Jones as a capable director of action, after the more sedentary thrills of Moon. He’s now in the pre-production stages of the World of Warcraft movie, the sort of  potential franchise tentpole film that could result in Jones being trusted with a budget large enough to make any feature he wants. Jones debuted a “mood piece” — a teaser trailer — for Warcraft, currently unavailable online (but a few souls in attendance in Hall H have posted their descriptions of it). He’s been talking up turning Mute into a graphic novel since 2011, when he told Gordon and the Whale:

The Preacher Project: Fan collects sketches for his father’s birthday

Preacher cast by Steve Dillon

In May 2011, Ryan Ballard began a quest to create the perfect birthday gift for his father, a comics fan with whom he shares a love of Preacher, the acclaimed Vertigo series by Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon and Glenn Fabry. So Ryan bought a copper album embossed with Fabry’s cover art for Issue #56 and set off to fill the book filled with sketches of Preacher characters from a range of artists. More than a year later, Ryan finally presented his father with the finished album, complete with art from the likes of Dillon, Fabry, Jim Mahfood, Rufus Dayglo, Ryan Kelly, Leigh Gallagher and Duncan Fegredo.

Ryan’s appreciative father thanked all of the artists who contributed, passing along this message: “This is a heads up to all the fantastic faces who invested their time, effort and skill in Ryan’s quest. My sincere and deepest thank you, it would be true to say that I learned to read from comics but your visuals opened my eyes and imagination.”

For his part, Ryan merely reminds his father he has a herculean task ahead of him: My birthday is in August, no pressure Dad …” See some of the sketches below, and visit the Preacher Project to see many more.

Dark Horse to release Rage video-game prequel

From Glenn Fabry's "Rage" cover

Dark Horse is teaming with developer id Software and video-game publisher Bethesda Softworks for a miniseries based on Rage, the first-person shooter set for release in September.

Debuting on June 22, the three-issue series is written by Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi) and penciled by Andrea Mutti (DMZ), with covers by Glenn Fabry (Hellblazer, Preacher). Rage creative director Tom Willits will oversee the title.

Set before the events of the game, the comic is described as presenting “a new twist on the post-apocalyptic near future as one woman discovers that the survival of humankind doesn’t necessarily mean the survival of humanity.” In Rage, Earth has been devastated by a collision with an asteroid, leaving a fraction of the population to survive in live-sustaining Arks buried deep beneath the surface. When they emerge, they discover a wasteland controlled by a military dictatorship called the Authority, which has lied about this apocalypse came to be.
