Oxford English Dictionary adds ‘hentai’ entry

Annual additions to the Oxford English Dictionary, “the definitive record of the English language,” always draw media attention because when a word or phrase is enshrined in the 127-year-old OED it becomes “official,” legitimate. It’s no longer just regional slang, professional jargon or an annoying acronym; it’s in the dictionary. Look it up, Mom!

This year’s updates are no different, drawing notice for an OED first — the heart symbol becomes the dictionary’s first graphic entry — as well as the inclusion of such text-messaging/online abbreviations as LOL and OMG. Thankfully SMH didn’t make the list of 45,436 new definitions (this year, at least).

But one that did is hentai, a noun that the companion Oxford Dictionaries — the OED site is subscription-only — defines as “a subgenre of the Japanese genres of manga and anime, characterized by overtly sexualized characters and sexually explicit images and plots.”

Which I guess will all help make that errant “OMG I <3 hentai” text immediately, if embarrassingly, understandable.

Six by 6 | Six x-rated comics you can read without shame

Small Favors Vol. 1

Dirty comics have been around almost as long as the medium itself. No doubt a few years after the Yellow Kid first appeared, some wiseacre created a Tijuana Bible of him getting busy with Buster Brown’s mom.

Sadly, most of the sex comics produced over the years are awful, dreary affairs — works that either feature abysmal art and writing or indulge in such ugly stereotypes (or both), so that you feel ashamed for all the people involved, including yourself for having read the thing.

But there are a few gems amidst the x-rated dross. Below are six smut-laden books that, while you may not want to be caught reading them on the bus, can proudly display on your bookshelf without embarrassment.

I had a couple of self-imposed rules with this one. First of all, the comic had to be sexually explicit. Second, it had to be primarily designed to titillate the reader, thus nixing darker, serious work like Phoebe Gloeckner’s A Child’s Life.

Also, I’m sure there are plenty of books I’m forgetting about (catering to my own tastes, there’s a focus on heterosexual fare here), so feel free to mention your own particular favorites in the comments section. You naughty thing you.

Finally, while I’ve tried to keep everything below the jump relatively safe for work, I can’t promise that all the links will be PG-rated, so caveat emptor.

Japan one-ups everybody (again) with erotic Obama comic

Obama and friends, from “My Neighbor Taro-kun”

Obama and friends, from “My Neighbor Taro-kun”

Savage Dragon and Barack Obama? Old news. Spider-Man and the president? Pfft. Kids’ stuff.

Japan pushes past the Spandex and slugfests — and, apparently, boundaries — with Tonari no Taro-kun (“My Neighbor Taro-kun”), an erotic manga starring Prime Minister Taro Aso. Hence the title.

But the February issue of My Neighbor Taro-kun features a very special guest: a dead ringer for U.S. President Obama. If I’m not mistaken, er-Obama is flanked in the panel at the right by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and possibly Sen. John McCain. Or Ron Howard; it could go either way.

According to Gia Manry, the gist of the issue is that Taro-kun gets “a black neighbor who calls for change.” Judging from these scans from Sankaku Complex — not safe for work, but probably not as bad as you imagine — he wants a little more than change.

Manry also points out the artist draws er-Obama with a dot (or Urna) on his forehead, a symbol of enlightment or wisdom often seen in depictions of Buddha. Cue another round of those “Chosen One” comments … now.
