NYCC | Edmondson, Laming team for Splinter Cell comic

Splinter Cell

Nathan Edmondson has made a name for himself in recent years for his “spy-fi” books like Who is Jake Ellis?, The Activity and his brief run on DC’s Grifter. Now he’s playing with toys created by the ultimate spy guy, author Tom Clancy.

Ubisoft Entertainment SA announced this week that Edmondson and artist Marc Laming (Exile on the Planet of the Apes, American Century) will bring Clancy’s Splinter Cell video game franchise to the printed page.

The graphic novel, titled Splinter Cell: Echoes, will feature the game’s protagonist Sam Fisher, and bridge the gap between Splinter Cell: Blacklist and its predecessor, Splinter Cell: Conviction.

“Nathan Edmondson and Marc Laming are respected experts in their fields and we are so incredibly fortunate to have them on board for the Splinter Cell graphic novel,” said Patrick Redding, game director, Ubisoft Toronto, in a statement. “Nathan’s work in The Activity put him on our radar with its gripping balance between real-world geopolitics and high-tech spy fantasy themes we also explore in Splinter Cell. We’re confident that all readers — whether they’ve played every game in the series or are new to the franchise — are going to really engage with this story and the level of fine detail Nathan and Marc inject into their book.”

The book comes out next year. Check out the launch trailer after the jump.

Art Barrage | Bond’s Wonder Woman and Bagwell’s Adventure Time

It used to be that the regular place to go to get new Philip Bond art was his Flickr page, but that has been joined of late by his Instagram feed. This Wonder Woman has something of both Robert Crumb and Summer Glau about her.

Below: plenty of great pieces by Jack Teagle, Edmund Bagwell, Fabio Moon and more. Continue Reading »

Assorted U.K. comics business

The anthology Ink + Paper is about to release its second issue, and again has a cracking line-up of contributors, including assorted U.K. graphic novelists, cartoonists and children’s book illustrators. I’ll be getting this, if just for the strip by Will Morris, whose The Silver Darlings will be out soon from Blank Slate, and which I’m anticipating eagerly.

Below: Dredd, Tank Girl, another NSFW Jamie Hewlett watercolor, and more Continue Reading »

Exile on the Planet of the Apes coming from BOOM! in March

Exile on the Planet of the Apes

BOOM! Studios’ March solicitations include several new projects, including a new Planet of the Apes miniseries called Exile on the Planet of the Apes.

Exile is a sequel to the miniseries Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes and will feature the return of the writing team, Corinna Sara Bechko and Gabriel Hardman. Hardman won’t be drawing the second mini, as he is currently busy with Secret Avengers, so the duo will be joined this time by artist Marc Laming.

“We’re thrilled that BOOM! and Fox are giving us this opportunity,” Hardman said on his blog. “The story is a direct sequel featuring Dr. Zaius and characters we introduced in Betrayal. Well, the ones who survive, anyway.”

Other projects due from BOOM! in March include a Hellraiser annual written solely by Clive Barker, an Ice Age one-shot from their kids line, a new superheroes-meets-Real Housewives comics called Supurbia and a retrospective of now-defunct independent publishing house Kitchen Sink Press.
