Mondo is now accepting preorders for its first entry into collectible toys: Lil Mikey, a 9-inch vinyl figure based on Mike Mitchell‘s adorable illustration of Michelangelo of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame.

Mitchell, a Mondo regular who’s been featured several times on ROBOT 6, drew Lil Mikey as part of his “Just Like Us” series, which features round-headed, child-like versions of characters ranging from The Punisher and Kraven to Ron Swanson and Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski.

Mike Mitchell displays Marvel love with 52 character portraits

Mitchell_Marvel_Digital700px

You don’t have to have powers to be a superhero, but you do have to stand out in a crowd, a quality popular commercial artist Mike Mitchell has captured in his profile portraits of 52 Marvel heroes and villains. Through May 17, Austin’s Mondo Gallery is showcasing Mitchell’s portraits in a exhibition called Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo. But even if you you can’t make it to Texas, you can still view the work, as he’s posted all 52 on his website.

“I picked my personal favorites, while also considering which characters would make decent portraits,” Mitchell told CBR earlier this month. “I can’t explain why, but I love the original Luke Cage design [revealed with the CBR interview]. There’s something very cool and timeless about him. Even though we live in an era where that version is out of style, I highly prefer it to the current, shaved head, yellow shirt and sunglasses Luke Cage.”

Here is a selection of some of the pieces, but go to Mitchell’s website for all of them.

Art Barrage | Superman’s disguises, ‘Temptation of Robin’ and more

Welcome to the first “Art Barrage” of the new year, in which I intend to bombard you with loads of interesting work you might not have seen before. Some of it is comic art, while sometimes it will come from the increasingly comics-besotted worlds of illustration, fine art and street art. Let’s kick off with the above image, from the second series of Mike Mitchell’s surprisingly disturbing re-skins of the classic pose from the cover of Superman #6 (we featured the first lot here at Robot 6 in October). See them all here — the They Live and Krang ones are genuinely freaking me out. That Margot Tenenbaum is pretty creepy, too.

Below is a piece that reminds me of what Mitchell is doing: Hillary White‘s T-shirt design for Threadless from last year, “Super LOL.” It gently takes the mick out of that sublime piece of Golden Age DERP!-thinking, that somehow just putting on a pair of glasses could ever instantly render Superman anonymous. Are you familiar with Ary Sheffer’s “Temptation of Christ“? Well, the second image below is White’s tribute, “Temptation of Robin.” It’s from her series, Pop-Reinterpretation, which also featured the much-blogged and Tumblred “True Muppet.”

Plenty more from around the world after the break, including France’s Didier Cassegrain, Italy’s Adriano De Vincentiis, Japan’s Patrick Awa, the U.K.’s Will Kirkby, the U.S.’s Babs Tarr, and Sweden’s Robert Sammelin.

Mike Mitchell re-skins Superman #6 with disturbing results

Illustrator Mike Mitchell, artist of the Tumblr-baiting Just Like Us series, has a new series on the go, re-skinning the classic strongman pose from the cover of Superman #6 with the wardrobe of other pop-culture icons. And the results are, to say the least, a little bit freaky. More below, and the full set so far can be seen here.
