PJ McQuade wants you to ‘Hive a Mos Wretched Holiday’

It wouldn’t be Christmas without mashup king PJ McQuade adding another couple of designs to his growing range of Star Wars-themed greetings cards. Every year I bemuse my elderly relations with such delights as the Tauntaun snow-licking “Hoth-y Holidays!” card. This year they’ll be just as baffled to receive “Jabba All the Way,” ‘Wampa in a Winter Wonderland,” “Hive a Mos Wretched Holiday” or “Merry This Christmas Is.” And, hey, I’ve just noticed that if you stick a white beard on Yoda, he starts to look a little like Alec Guinness.

‘I’m in the Empire business': PJ McQuade’s Darth Heisenberg

Those newfangled social networks have been heaving with all manner of Breaking Bad-related nonsense over the past few days, and I’ve been trying to avoid all of it, for fear of spoilers. I did, however, come across this in my RSS feed and chuckle. It’s by mash-up king PJ McQuade (we’ve featured his Wolverine/Quint and his Walking Dead/Star Wars pieces recently), and it is so tonally pitch-perfect that I had to share it — my qualms that it’s maybe not really comics-related faded as I remembered that Star Wars has existed as a comic for essentially as long as it has as a movie franchise. So there.

Anyway, ladies and gentlemen: Darth Heisenberg. He’s available as a print (and as a vinyl sticker) from McQuade’s Etsy shop.

PJ McQuade mashes up Quint from ‘Jaws’ and Wolverine

We’ve featured Brooklyn-based illustrator PJ McQuade before because of his frequently comics-friendly work. His latest piece, created for the MF Gallery’s 10th anniversary exhibition, is something of a show-stopper: a mash-up that seems to have struck McQuade purely because of the awesomeness of the sideburns on both Quint in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and Wolverine. Thinking about it, it was inevitable, really. The original painting is already sold, but you can buy a print of this from McQuade’s Etsy storefront.

My favorite part of the design is the tribute to that much-missed (by some of us nostalgic old farts, anyway) feature of old Marvel comics, the corner box. This lovingly rendered image of the late great Robert Shaw is also available from McQuade’s Etsy shop, if you’d like the disembodied head of a salty old sea dog semi-permanently staring you out from the cover of your laptop/dash of your speedboat/whatever. I know I do. And now I’ve got a mysterious longing for sushi, too.

Meanwhile, somewhere north of Madison Avenue …

draper-stark

Within days of each other, we’ve had new seasons of Game of Thrones and Mad Men starting, here’s the inevitable mash-up, “Don Stark” by the great PJ McQuade. Don wouldn’t last five minutes in the Night’s Watch, of course. They may be the most stylish men in the Seven Kingdoms, but I couldn’t imagine him ever taking that vow of celibacy.

‘Love You I Do': PJ McQuade’s Star Wars-themed Valentine’s cards

It’s getting close to that time of the year when the assorted nerds of Earth have to make grand gestures to their significant others, in order to remind them that we’re worth holding onto, despite us insisting on filling the attic with longboxes full of musty old copies of Teen Titans. And what could be grander than these Valentine’s Day card designs by PJ McQuade? You may already be familiar with the Brooklyn illustrator’s Star Wars-themed Christmas cards, but he’s now branching out into that most cynical romantic of holidays. Maybe he’ll keep rolling these out for every upcoming festivity — I dread to think of what he could come up with for St. Patrick’s Day.

McQuade also produced a couple of great Star Wars tribute prints for the recent show Gadgets and Gizmos at Brooklyn’s pop-culture specialists the Bottleneck Gallery. I love this relic-ed box art for a Dejarik Holochess board game that never was. Let the Wookiee win!
