As is only fitting for a city so closely associated with comic creators, Travel Portland turned to Steve Lieber (Whiteout, Underground) to star in a television ad to promote Portland, Oregon’s tax-free holiday shopping. Better still, the 30-second spot features some of Lieber’s artwork.

Comics A.M. | New York Comic Con absorbs New York Anime Festival

New York Comic Con

Conventions | ReedPOP has officially announced it will fold the New York Anime Festival into New York Comic Con, rather than continue them as separate events held at the same location. “This move has nothing to do with our loyalty or commitment to the anime community and everything to do with the growth and identity of New York Comic Con as a leading pop culture event,” ReedPOP’s Lance Fensterman said in a statement. “NYCC embraces all elements of the pop culture world, including anime, and we have evolved to a point where the existence of NYAF outside our universe is almost a contradiction. We will be better able to serve the anime community from within the NYCC infra-structure rather than have a show which is separate and which will always be dwarfed by everything that New York Comic Con represents and is.” [press release]

Passings | Cartoonist Jim Unger, whose one-panel comic Herman served as an inspiration for Gary Larson’s The Far Side, passed away Monday at his home in British Columbia. He was 75. The comic appeared in about 600 newspapers worldwide from 1974 until Unger’s retirement in 1992. [The Daily Cartoonist]

Your video of the day | Meet SamDroid, mayor of Portland

As if Portland, Ore. needed any more help in becoming comic-friendly, apparently their mayor is also a superhero. Mayor Sam Adams appeared at the recent Stumptown Comics Fest in full cosplay, dressed as SamDroid, a character designed by Manny McIvor as part of a competition held by the Alter Egos Society. The above video, courtesy of Things From Another World, includes interviews with the mayor, McIvor and Alter Egos Society founder Benja Barker.

Comic artists belt out toons for Portland Opera

by Barry Deutsch

The Portland Opera is currently putting on performances of Turandot, and for a dress rehearsal on Jan. 31 they invited several local comic artists to watch the performance and “draw whatever struck our fancy,” according to artist Mike Russell.

Russell not only drew some artwork you can find on the Portland Opera’s website, but also created a “live comic adaptation” you can find on his site. Other artists who participated include Barry Deutsch, Aaron McConnell, Ron Randall and Joëlle Jones, among others.

You can check out all the images on the Portland Opera’s website.

Take a peek inside Periscope Studio

Oregon Public Broadcasting pays a visit to Portland’s Periscope Studio, home to more than 20 comics creators, including Jeff Parker, Steve Lieber, Colleen Coover, Paul Tobin and Dylan Meconis. The seven-minute segment focuses largely on Erika Moen and Ron Randall, but it also provides a glimpse of other studio members and their work environment.
