Almost immediately after ABC announced the cancellation of Pushing Daisies in November 2008, creator Bryan Fuller began talking about resurrecting the quirky comedy as a comic book. Over the next two and a half years since, he’s occasionally offered updates about the fate of the pie-maker who can bring things back to life, saying just last fall that the first issue “will hopefully be out in early 2011.”

Well, it’s early 2011, and there’s no first issue. But Fuller has offered, or rather tweeted, the next-best thing: a preview of the first page. He doesn’t indicate who the artist is, though.

There’s also no word yet as to when we’ll see the first issue, as Pushing Daisies had been destined for DC Comics’ recently closed WildStorm imprint.

Fuller has described the comic as a 12-issue series that ties up loose ends left by the show’s untimely demise as the characters deal with a flash flood that empties bodies from a nearby cemetery.

Check out the full page after the break.

In one of his round-up posts where he answers questions about TV shows, Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello shares some news on the Pushing Daisies comic straight from series creator Brian Fuller:

“Issue number 1 will hopefully be out in early 2011, issue number 2 is being colored as we speak, and issue number 3 is being written,” Fuller said. “Our Emmy-award-winning composer Jim Dooley and I have been talking about giving the audience a multimedia experience with the comic—specifically a score. We have no idea whether we can actually afford to do an actual Pushing Daisies comic soundtrack (because the cast has agreed to sing songs and those licensing fees are expensive), but Jim has already started composing musical cues that we will either release officially or stream for freesies online when the comic book is published. I’ve already heard the track for Lee Pace’s cover ditty and it’s fantastic.”

Fuller began talking about the possibility of a Pushing Daisies comic not long after ABC canceled the quirky show about a pie maker who could bring the dead back to life. He said the comic will tie up loose ends left by Pushing Daisies‘ demise as the characters deal with a flash flood that empties bodies from a nearby cemetery. Previous reports also have said the book will run 12 issues and will be published by DC Comics.

Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller reportedly has begun writing the long-discussed comic-book continuation of the canceled television series.

While promoting Fox’s new Human Target adaptation, actor Chi McBride revealed to Sci Fi Wire that he’s read some of Fuller’s script for the comic, which apparently will be released by DC — through its Wildstorm imprint, presumably — as a 12-issue miniseries.

“He sent me a couple pages,” said McBride, who played private detective Emerson Cod in the quirky ABC comedy-drama. “It was off the hook. It’s really good.”

The Emmy Award-winning series, about a pie-maker who can (with some limitations) resurrect the dead, was canceled last spring after just two seasons.

Fuller, who created Dead Like Me and co-created Wonderfalls — both short-lived cult favorites — revealed in May that the comic will tie up loose ends left by Pushing Daisies‘ untimely demise as the characters deal with a flash flood that empties bodies from a nearby cemetery.

McBride said the comic “seems a little darker” in tone than what Fuller was allowed to do on ABC.

“There’s one particular story that I hope he does called ‘The Head’,” he said. “I wished he could’ve done it during the series. It was awesome.”

As the clock ticks down to the final three episodes of Pushing Daisies, creator Bryan Fuller offers a few more details on the show’s continuation this fall in comic-book form.

The Emmy-nominated comedy-drama, about a pie-maker who can (with a few critical limitations) resurrect the dead, was canceled by ABC in November after barely two seasons.

Fuller, who also created Dead Like Me and co-created Wonderfalls, revealed last month he’d struck a deal with DC Comics for a 12-issue miniseries — through Wildstorm, presumably — that will tie up loose ends left by Pushing Daisies‘ untimely demise.

“We’ve arced it out,” Fuller tells Sci Fi Wire in a new interview that contains spoilers for the final episodes. “The dangling threads from the series with Chuck’s father and Ned’s father and the pocket watches are all dealt with, not secondarily, but there’s a whole new story that happens when there is a flash flood in the cemetery and all the bodies wash past Ned’s and it’s Ned versus a thousand corpses. That’s the story of the comic book.”

He says if the miniseries is successful, we could see more Pushing Daisies comics.

The first of the final three episodes airs tonight at 10 Eastern on ABC.

Remember what Bryan Fuller said last week about resurrecting Pushing Daisies at Marvel? Well, forget it.

He now says the canceled ABC TV series will see new life at DC Comics as a 12-issue miniseries.

“We got a 12-issue order for a comic book for DC Comics,” Fuller tells E! Online. “I think the comic book is great, because it has all the characters in it, and it starts a new story. It’s basically Chuck, Ned, Emerson and Olive versus 1,000 corpses, so it becomes a zombie movie, but the zombies are articulate and smart and can do things that no other zombies can do. The Pie-Maker versus 1,000 corpses.”

The comic is set to debut this fall. However, attendees at Comic-Con International may receive another giveaway a few months early. (A preview comic was distributed at Comic-Con in 2007, before the show debuted.)

The Emmy-nominated comedy-drama, about a pie-maker who can resurrect the dead (with some limitations), was canceled in November after barely two seasons. The final three episodes will air beginning May 30.
