<p><strong>Digital comics</strong> | ICv2 estimates the total value of the digital comics market in 2011 as $25 million, triple the 2010 figure, and boldly predicts that digital will account for 10 percent of the entire comics market in 2012. Digital sales grew faster in the second half of the year, which ICv2 attributes to three factors: DC&#8217;s decision to release its New 52 comics digitally the same day as print, the industry-wide trend toward same-day print and digital releases, and the proliferation of different platforms on which to read digital comics. As for digital taking away from print, the publishing executives ICv2 has spoken to over the past few months don&#8217;t seem to think that is happening. <p><strong>Creators</strong> | Japanese creator Takehiko Inoue has resumed work on his long-running series <em>Vagabond,</em> after taking a lengthy break, first for health reasons and then because  he lost interest in it. He told fans he wouldn&#8217;t go back to work on  the series, which is serialized in Kodansha&#8217;s <em>Morning</em> magazine,  until he regained his enthusiasm for it. That seems to have happened,  and the new chapter is being colored. <em>Vagabond</em> is published in North America by Viz Media. <p><a href="http://thevariants.com/"><em>The Variants</em></a>, the humorous web video series set at Zeus Comics in Dallas, wrapped up its second season this week. The episode features the cast dealing with a potential investor and his attorney. &#8220;Can the Zeus employees handle their scrutiny, or will they throw each other under the idiot<br />
bus in pursuit of vacation days and dental?&#8221; The episode also features appearances by Curt Franklin and Chris Haley of the webcomic <em><a href="http://www.letsbefriendsagain.com  ">Let&#8217;s Be Friends Again</a></em>.</p>
<p>The episode wraps up a season that featured some fun moments, like <a href="http://thevariants.com/episode/roll_for_initiative">the D&#038;D episode</a> and the <a href="http://thevariants.com/episode/where_theres_a_will_theres_a_waid">guest appearance by Mark Waid</a>. According to Zeus Comics&#8217; Richard Neal, a third season is in the works for late summer/early fall. &#8220;There will be a couple of bigger cast and character announcements closer to the launch of the new season,&#8221; he said. </p>

<p>Terry Moore announced on his blog last week that <a href="http://www.terrymooreart.com/?p=1978">he will release his comics digitally via comiXology</a>, beginning with <em>Strangers in Paradise</em> and hopefully going on to <em>Rachel Rising,</em> his current series. Actually, he lets one of his would-be readers, Aaron, do most of the talking:</p>
<blockquote><p>I went to Bedrock Comics today, asked about <em>Rachel Rising</em> #5, and was told that they only ordered two copies, and both were pre-orders. The shopkeeper said when the book first came out, he ordered more, based on track record, but they didn’t sell. I simply don’t have the time to go searching around, and I don’t buy enough comics to warrant a pull list. I’m not sure what the problem is that there “isn’t a single penny” for you with digital, but I’d buy PDFs straight from this site if I could. Unfortunately, I can’t justify $6.99 plus shipping for a comic&#8230;.</p>
<p>There is something profoundly wrong with the distribution system when a title from a leading creator can’t be found at a comic store in a major metropolitan area. I can’t see how digital would be any worse for you, and it would be a lot better for me (and I’m betting plenty of others). I want to support your work, but it shouldn’t be this difficult.</p></blockquote>
<p>This is the problem, in a nutshell, for independent creators like Moore. I&#8217;m sure if Aaron were looking for the latest DC or Marvel title, there would be no problem, but it&#8217;s hard for retailers to take a risk on titles that may not sell — or that don&#8217;t sell well for the first couple of issues. You can&#8217;t blame them for that, but it presents an obstacle to new or alternative creators whose work may take a while to catch on. Moore isn&#8217;t abandoning print, or the direct market, but he&#8217;s a good example of a creator who will probably add readers with digital.</p>

<p><strong>Awards</strong> | Paul Register, founder and organizer of the Stan  Lee Excelsior Awards, writes about how the awards, which are selected by  11- to 16-year-olds in the U.K., came to be and why they are important:  &#8220;In a system that rarely studies complete texts and doesn’t overtly  place a huge importance on the clear benefits of children reading  outside the classroom, comics have become marginalised in schools at a  time when their potential for raising literacy standards amongst  teenagers has arguably never been greater. <p>&#8220;I think everyone has noticed that Marvel has started publishing a number of their books more than once a month. They&#8217;ve been ramping up on this for a while, and it&#8217;s something I&#8217;ve kind of shook my head at, because it&#8217;s a desperate ploy to gain marketshare that doesn&#8217;t promote sustainability on any level. It&#8217;s a cash grab, pure and simple, and when you couple that with the fact so many of their books are creeping up on $3.99, I shudder to think of the long-term effects.</p>
<p>&#8220;And I can hear you shaking your own head now. Okay, maybe I can&#8217;t hear you doing that, but I can imagine the chuckling: &#8216;Desperate? Marvel is the number one publisher in comics!&#8217; – but I&#8217;ll stand by my words. When DC launched their new 52 last September, Marvel didn&#8217;t fight back with awesome. They fought back with the only real tool in their shed: more. They&#8217;re not increasing the frequency of their books out of generosity, they&#8217;re doing it to dominate the market. And in the absence of anything even resembling new, all we get is more.&#8221;</p>

He goes on to talk about many of Marvel&#8217;s recent and upcoming event books, from <em>Fear Itself</em> to <em>X-Men vs. Avengers</em>, saying they are akin to a &#8220;bored child reaching into the toy box trying to find new ways to wring some meager enjoyment out of faded old playthings. The fun lasts for a little while, but you can only tell yourself something&#8217;s all-new and all-different so many times before those words ring hollow. <em>Avengers vs. X-Men</em> wasn&#8217;t a new idea when Marvel did it in 1987, and it&#8217;s not a new idea now.&#8221; </p>

<p><strong>Publishing</strong> | Longtime industry hand Jason Thompson has written a  thoughtful essay on why the manga industry is in trouble, going beyond  the American scene to point out structural problems in the Japanese market: An aging readership, the decline of print and the  reluctance of Japanese publishers to embrace digital publishing in any  coherent way. &#8220;Perhaps wary of creating an iTunes-like behemoth which  could drive prices down,&#8221; Thompson writes, &#8220;publishers haven&#8217;t united in any reasonable way  to create a consistent digital newsstand/bookstore format for their  titles.&#8221; This, of course, has just made life easier for the scanlators. He also points to a shift toward the individual creator — it&#8217;s the  big publishers who are hurting, while self-published and indy manga are  on the rise. All this may sound familiar to American comics fans, but  Thompson&#8217;s prescriptions for the future — more gag manga, simpler art,  more color, and motion comics &#8212; don&#8217;t seem like convincing ways to  rescue the industry. I wanted to spend time on characters’ emotional reactions and inner thoughts in the comics, so everything ended up being much more decompressed. I had to give space to the characters, so they could react to a cruel/funny/sad comment by another character, or silently work through their inner struggles. That episode was the first time I connected drawing comics with the idea of myself as a director: the characters were my actors and I was directing them in a performance. <p>Ron Perazza, who <a href="http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/05/ron-perazza-resigns-from-dc-entertainment/" target="_blank">resigned in May as DC Entertainment&#8217;s vice president of online</a>, has been named vice president-general manager of publisher and creative services for comiXology, the digital comics retailer and platform provider.</p>
<p>According to the announcement, he will work with co-founder John D. Roberts to develop &#8220;comiXology’s next generation publisher and creator tools.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;There are only a handful of people in the comic book industry that have the  depth and breadth of knowledge and experience that Ron does, in taking comic  books from the print to the digital world” Roberts said in a statement. “Ron will be instrumental in the creation of a stellar set of  next generation tools for our current and future publishing partners. We are  confident that Ron will help comiXology take comics to the next level.”</p>
<p>Perazza, who <a href="http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/12/dc-names-ron-perazza-as-vice-president-of-online/" target="_blank">before his promotion in December 2010</a> was DC&#8217;s vice president of creative services, is best known for his role in overseeing the company’s online initiatives,  including the defunct Zuda imprint. He reportedly left the company after changing his mind about moving from New York to Burbank, California, with DC’s administration, multimedia and digital-content operations. ComiXology is based in New York City.</p>

<p>Nearly five months after the debut of DC Comics&#8217; &#8220;New 52,&#8221; the Washington, D.C., Fox affiliate has taken aim at the &#8220;edgy makeover,&#8221; zeroing in on <a href="http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/09/dcs-push-for-the-new-52-this-is-a-catwoman-for-2011/" target="_blank">the controversial first issues of <em>Catwoman</em> and <em>Red Hood and the Outlaws</em></a>.</p>
<p>For the Fox report, <a href="http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/special_report/relaunched-comics-using-sex-and-violence-to-sell-011812" target="_blank">titled &#8220;Relaunched Comics Using Sex and Violence to Sell&#8221; on the affiliate&#8217;s website</a>, correspondent Sherri Ly turns to child psychologist Neil Bernstein, who characterizes the much-discussed sex scene between Batman and Catwoman as, &#8220;sort of like a fictionalized <em>Playboy</em> for kids at its worst.&#8221;</p>
<p>He goes on to suggest the comic may pose a danger to young readers, as overexposure to sex and violence could encourage aggression. Yes, <em>really</em>. &#8220;I think too many kids would be put in harm&#8217;s way or at risk,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Bernstein also dissects <em>Red Hood and the Outlaws</em> #1, in which Starfire propositions Roy Harper for sex, later saying, &#8220;Love has nothing to do with it.&#8221; &#8220;We want our kids to think sex is an act between two consenting mature  individuals who care deeply for one another,&#8221; he says. &#8220;That doesn&#8217;t really come  across and it&#8217;s too easily to misconstrue things particularly for a  kid.&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-103758"></span></p>
<p>And to underscore just <em>how</em> dangerous and easily misconstrued the comics are, Ly &#8230; went to a local middle school, and showed them to some children. Sherri Ly and Fox 5: putting kids in harm&#8217;s way?</p>
<p>While it can be, and certainly <em>has</em> been, argued that those issues of <em>Catwoman</em> and <em>Red Hood and the Outlaws</em> are sexist, misogynistic or just downright bad, or that other comics in the DC relaunch have been gratuitously violent and gory, Fox 5 ratchets the debate to alarmist, Wertham-esque levels.</p>
<p>For further evidence, look no further than the promo for the report, which promised tips on &#8220;HOW TO K.O. THESE COMICS BEFORE THEY CORRUPT YOUR KIDS!&#8221; It&#8217;s that teaser that <a href="http://cbldf.org/homepage/how-to-manage-a-media-attack/" target="_blank">led the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund to release a retailer advisory on &#8220;how to manage a media attack,</a>&#8221; which breaks down &#8220;how to deal with hostile cameras if they come to your store.&#8221;</p>

People said to me, &#8216;How&#8217;d you let things get so out of  control?&#8217; It&#8217;s like one day waking up and you&#8217;re 30 pounds overweight.  You&#8217;re not exactly sure how you got 30 pounds overweight, but you know  you didn&#8217;t eat 30 pounds of food the night before. However as a retailer it&#8217;s more than a little disappointing. It&#8217;s a business as usual kind of move that shows the shallowness of short-term thinking at work that might help Marvel win the summer and us sell some comics.  But in the long-term the survival of the entire industry hinges on a publisher&#8217;s willingness to appeal to more than its dwindling base.&#8221;</p>

We&#8217;ve already seen evidence of that commitment in the use of fill-in artists and some creative assists, but now it looks as if one of its titles is missing a beat &#8212; and it&#8217;s the biggest title the company has.</p>
<p><em>Justice League </em>#5 was scheduled for release Jan. 18, according to the <a href="http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&amp;id=34977" target="_blank"><em>Previews </em>catalog</a> as well as the publisher&#8217;s own <a href="http://dccomics.com/dcu/comics/?cm=20926" target="_blank">website</a>, but recent information from Diamond Comic Distributors suggests it won&#8217;t make that date.</p>
<p>Issue 5<em> </em>isn&#8217;t among the titles the distributor has scheduled to ship <a href="http://www.previewsworld.com/Home/1/1/71/954" target="_blank">Wednesday</a> &#8230; or <a href="http://www.previewsworld.com/Home/1/1/71/977?articleID=117036" target="_blank">the week after</a>. Robot 6 emailed DC comment and a revised release date, but has yet to receive a response.</p>
<p>Although a late title <em>clearly</em> isn&#8217;t unheard of, this one is intriguing for two reasons: first, because it&#8217;s the flagship of DC&#8217;s &#8220;New 52,&#8221; and second, because the creators involved, writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee, are also company executives who, at least indirectly, oversee the line editors whose responsibility it is to make sure books ship on time. It&#8217;s important to note the reason for the lateness can&#8217;t be connected to Johns or Lee; the blame could fall on any step of the production chain.</p>
<p><span id="more-103310"></span></p>
<p>While DC hasn&#8217;t responded to our earlier inquiry, we <em>did</em> find a comment made by Co-Publisher Dan DiDio during the lead-up to New 52 regarding this this potential issue.</p>
<p>&#8220;[Timeliness is] more hard-line than in the past for several reasons, and one is  that it&#8217;s the largest concern we&#8217;ve heard from retailers on a continual  basis,&#8221; he said in <a href="http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dcnu-didio-lee-talk-new-52-110719.html" target="_blank">an interview with Newsarama</a>. &#8220;They&#8217;ve been concerned in the past about our inability to put out  books on a consistent basis, especially the books that people are  looking for.&#8221;</p>
<p>DiDio stressed that DC has a &#8220;contract with the retailers&#8221; and the fans for consistent releases, and admitted that sales have suffered when the publisher released late books in the past.</p>
<p>He specifically guaranteed &#8220;100 percent delivery,&#8221; which this delayed <em>Justice League </em>#5<em> </em>would break from, saying, &#8220;There&#8217;s nothing more frustrating for me or any of the fans, I&#8217;m  sure,  to be excited about something then not be really sure when it&#8217;s  coming  out.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Update (11:17 a.m. PT): </strong>A DC spokesperson responded that <em>Justice League </em>#5 is now scheduled for release on Jan. 25, just one week after its original date. The Diamond&#8217;s tentative shipping for Jan. 25 list doesn&#8217;t yet reflect that information.</p>
<p><strong>Update (3: 38 p.m. PT): </strong>A DC representative has since <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/DCComics/status/157948130489417731" target="_blank">tweeted</a>: &#8220;We can confirm that <em>Justice League</em> #5 from @jimlee and @geoffjohns is indeed hitting shelves next week.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Update (5:19 p.m. PT): </strong>DC has clarified its previous statement, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/DCComics/status/157991305874644993" target="_blank">tweeting</a>: &#8220;Sorry for the confusion: <em>Justice League</em> 5 will hit shelves on January 25th.&#8221;</p>

If you read something in this fashion you will notice stuff that you skipped over so quickly because your eye takes in the whole page instead of the panel individually. <p><strong>Digital comics</strong> | On a related note, Shaun Huston ponders the challenges of making &#8220;comics as we know them&#8221; work on digital devices: &#8220;While there’s some latitude to read full pages on the iPad, and the Fire  at 4.7” x 7.5” (or the Nooks) affords that option more realistically  than the iPhone or similarly-sized devices, in all of these cases there  will be situations where most readers will shift to Guided View in order  to effectively see some particular detail on a page. For many, Guided  View will be the primary choice, which is a qualitatively different  experience than reading page-by-page. <p><strong>Creators</strong> | Artist Fiona Staples has responded to <a href="http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2012/01/quote-of-the-day-dave-dorman-takes-offense-at-saga-art/" target="_blank">Dave Dorman&#8217;s objection to her cover for <em>Saga</em> #1</a>, which shows a woman breastfeeding an infant: &#8220;I find it a little hard to fathom why anyone would object to a  depiction of breastfeeding, even if it were on a kids&#8217; comic, which it  isn&#8217;t. I have yet to hear a line of reasoning that makes sense to me.  That said, anyone who wants to be grossed out by our comic is of course  free to do so.
