"The Flash" Director Seth Grahame-Smith Departs Over 'Creative Differences'
It happens every year: Despite the best efforts of authors, publishers and publicists, there are smart, funny and downright entertaining comics that fail to get their proper due. It’s a truth made more manifest every year as production and publishing costs are lowered and more and more people find ways of getting their work on print or online.
So once again I’ve put together a list of some books I thought could have used a bit more love, at least in terms of coverage if not also sales (though usually it’s both). These aren’t necessarily the best books of the past year – I’m not sure I’d swap any of them out for my own top 10 list – they’re just really good comics that didn’t seem to get enough attention. Conventions | Although convention organizers rolled out an altered name — WonderCon Anaheim — and logo when they confirmed two weeks ago that the event will return to Anaheim, California, again next year, they insist they haven’t close the door on San Francisco. “We still want to get back to the Bay Area. […] We are in touch with [the Moscone Center organizers] fairly regularly and we have an open dialogue,” says David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations. “They haven’t given up on us, either.” The convention was uprooted from the Moscone Center in 2012 first because of remodeling and now because of scheduling conflicts. WonderCon Anaheim will be held April 18-20. [Publishers Weekly]

Jim Rugg has a fascinating post on his blog spelling out how he made his latest zine, a collection of old comics ads. It starts with an idea and runs through every part of the creation process, including such nuts-and-bolts matters as getting paper and refurbished printer cartridges to cut down the cost. Rugg and collaborator Jason Lex started by pulling out the old comics and picking the best of the ads, then put them together into a PDF.
There were lots of things to consider, including matching the type of paper in the zine to the originals the ads were printed on, and I like it that Rugg came up with the idea for some nice finishing touches during a long-distance run. The post ends with a little something extra — a vintage ad followed by John Porcellino’s comic based on it. It’s a really nice how-I-did-it post with some useful information for would-be self-publishers, and plenty of visual goodies for the rest of us.
