Comic-Con Trailers: The Best of the Best, Ranked
A Kickstarter campaign to fund an immersive (and official) theatrical experience based on The Walking Dead has rocketed past its $60,000, just days into the effort.
A collaboration between the The Walker Stalkers, the organizers of Walker Stalker Con, and Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment, “The Walking Dead Experience” is designed to bring fans into the world of the hit horror franchise, and put them in a situation in which they must use skill and teamwork to figure out how to escape before getting eaten.
Lumbering into Toys”R”Us stores next month, the new assortment of Walking Dead Minimates from Diamond Select Toys will feature characters from the “All Out War” story arc of the acclaimed comic series by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard.
Inspired by Adlard’s artwork, each 2-inch minifigure features 14 points of articulation, interchangeable parts and character-specific accessories. The assortment features four two-packs, each with a human paired with a walker. Here’s the character lineup:
Next week will be big for Thief of Thieves artist Shawn Martinbrough on two fronts, as not only does Thief of Thieves #26 go on sale Feb. 25, but on the following day he’ll discuss his career and his noir-influenced approach to storytelling as part of the Society of Illustrators’ celebration of Black History Month. He’ll be joined in the conversation by comics writer and historian Danny Fingeroth.
In conjunction with the release of Thief of Thieves #26, ROBOT 6 asked Martinbrough to rank his 10 favorite covers, and reveal a bit about the creative process for each one:
Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan have a fun series going with Birthright. Debuting in October from Skybound, the fantasy is in the middle of its first arc, introducing Mikey, a boy from our world who crossed over to a fantasy world at age 10, only to return a year later as a 30-year-old warrior hero. After a rocky reunion with his family — his father Aaron, his mother Wendy and his “older” brother Brennan — Mikey escaped police custody and went out on the road, on a mission to take out five evil wizards who found their way into our reality.
However, not all is as it seems: Mikey is under the influence of the Nevermind, an evil presence at the core of problems in the other world, and his mission is anything but transparent.
ROBOT 6 spoke with Williamson about the direction of Birthright, balancing different aspects of the story, and the importance of choice and family as the series moves forward. Skybound also provided us with exclusive pages from Issue 4.
In Birthright, the upcoming fantasy adventure by writer Joshua Williamson, artist Andrei Bressan and colorist Adriano Lucas, young Mikey Rhodes goes missing, leaving his father a suspect in his murder, and the rest of his family in shambles. But just mysteriously as he disappeared, Mikey reappears, but he’s changed.
Debuting in October from Skybound/Image Comics, the series centers on a boy who’s kidnapped by fairies and told he’s destined to to defeat a great evil. But once he accomplishes that and returns home, what’s next?
To tell that epic tale, Williamson, Bressan and Lucas not only had to create a war-ravaged otherworld populated by fantasy creatures and untold horrors, they also had to establish a realistic, familiar setting in which the Rhodes family drama unfolds.
The creative team provided ROBOT 6 with an exclusive glimpse into the process, sharing their thoughts on world-building, their approach to the designs of the central characters and the fantasy realm of Terrenos, and the mammoth undertaking of the impressive poster for Birthright.
The clock is ticking down at Humble Bundle on Skybound’s The Walking Dead Bundle, which allows customers to name their own price for DRM-free digital editions of the first volumes of Ghosted, Invincible, Witch Doctor and, of course, The Walking Dead.
The deal doesn’t stop there, however: Those who pay more than the average amount offered ($11.59) can unlock the second and third volumes of The Walking Dead, the first volumes of Thief of Thieves, Manifest Destiny and Clone, the first and second volumes of Super Dinosaur, and the second volume of Invincible. Fifteen dollars will also open the fourth and fifth volumes of The Walking Dead.
Image Comics has announced a lineup of Comic-Con International exclusives that range from the foil-covered Chew: Chicken Warrior Poyo #1 and the debut of Low to the connecting covers of Manifest Destiny #8 and The Walking Dead #129.
The Image and Skybound releases will be available at the Image booth (#2729), while the Top Cow titles can be found at the Top Cow booth (#2629). Comic-Con kicks off Wednesday with Preview Night and continues through Sunday.
Those die-hard fans who can’t get enough of The Walking Dead, even with the comic books, television series, video game, special events, clothing and collectible toys, now have an opportunity to kick up their devotion several notches: the Hyundai Tucson Walking Dead Special Edition soon will be arriving at U.S. dealerships.
Announced in November, the release of the limited-edition model coincides with the 10th anniversary of the comic series created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. Featuring an Ash Black exterior with red accents (including surprisingly subtle walker hands), the Tucson comes with decals representing the comic’s four factions — Hilltop, Kingdom, Saviors and Survivors — and a 72-hour custom zombie survival kit/backpack, branded with the Walking Dead logo, naturally.
Three weeks after Marc Silvestri and Todd McFarlane pulled back the curtain on their collaboration process for a Skybound cover, Image Comics has unveiled the final product: a variant for Manifest Destiny #7. It’s colored by series colorist Owen Gieni.
The issue kicks off a new arc in the series by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts, which tells the hidden story of the Lewis & Clark expedition (one filled with monsters).

The creators of The Walking Dead: The Prison board game may have jumped the gun over the weekend when they canceled their Kickstarter campaign and announced an exclusive agreement with Diamond Comic Distributors and its subsidiary Alliance Game Distributors.
“We have not agreed to an exclusive distribution deal for this game,” John Wurzer, Diamond’s vice president of purchasing, tells ICv2.com. “We have been having discussions regarding the possibility of a distribution agreement, but none is in place.”
Launched early last month, the Kickstarter campaign was intended to raise $81,100 to produce a licensed standalone sequel to Z-Man Games’ hit 2011 release Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead: The Board Game, based on the bestselling comic series (rather than the television adaptation, like Cryptozoic’s game). But on Saturday, after securing $31,830 in pledges, the creators announced they had struck “an amazing distribution deal with the perfect distribution partner,” and therefore didn’t “feel comfortable continuing to ask for funding money through Kickstarter.”
ICv2 reached out to game designer Keith Tralins, who replied, “I can’t really comment right now, other to say [sic] that discussions are ongoing.”
The creators of The Walking Dead: The Prison board game canceled their Kickstarter campaign over the weekend, announcing they’ve secured an exclusive distribution agreement with Diamond-owned Alliance Game Distributors. The officially licensed game is expected to be solicited this week.
“Given that we now have an amazing distribution deal with the perfect distribution partner, we don’t feel comfortable continuing to ask for funding money through Kickstarter,” the developers said in an update posted Saturday. “As such, in a short while, we’re going to cancel our campaign for the game, and focus all our energies on getting the game to the distribution center as soon as possible.”
AMC and Finnish developer Next Games are producing a mobile game based on The Walking Dead, the hit television adaptation of the bestselling comic series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard.
The game is scheduled to launch in October to coincide with the Season 5 premiere of the TV series.
VentureBeat reports that Jon Goldman, previously chairman and CEO of Foundation 9 Entertainment, will focus on emerging and new business, overseeing “the strategic direction for the company and [operating] businesses around games and live events.”
“Our collective goal is to build major enterprises surrounding the remarkable worlds that Robert creates within his comics all while remaining true to fans,” Goldman is quoted as saying.
The news comes just a week after Skybound announced that its “Walking Dead Escape” obstacle course, already popular at Comic-Con International and New York Comic Con, will launch a cross-country tour in April. The bestselling Walking Dead comic series has, of course, already spawned a hit television drama (with a spinoff in development), video games and numerous collectibles.
Launched in 2010, Skybound is an Image Comics imprint that serves as home to Kirkman’s titles, like The Walking Dead, Invincible, Thief of Thieves and the upcoming Outcast, as well as books from other creators — among them, Witch Doctor, Manifest Destiny and Dead Body Road.
A math-minded 4chan commenter has done a bit of number-crunching to arrive at an interesting theory: that The Walking Dead‘s zombie plague should’ve ended after a year, simply by biter attrition.
While the passage of time is difficult to discern in either the comic or the TV series, it would appear to be about two years since the outbreak began in the former, and a little less in the latter — more than enough time to dispatch the flesh-eating hordes. In theory, anyway.
After teasing the number last week in USA Today, Image Comics officially announced The Walking Dead #115 — the 10th-anniversary issue that kicks off the storyline “All Out War” — immediately sold out on the distributor level its day of release, shipping more than 352,000 copies to the direct market. That makes the issue the top comic of the year to date in specialty shops, beating the estimated 308,000 copies sold in February by Justice League of America #1.
The landmark 100th issue of the series, by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn, was the top-selling comic in the direct market in 2012, setting set a new record for highest orders for a comic in a single month with an estimated 366,000 copies.
