Artist reimagines heroes, villains in minimalist ‘Masks’ series

Experimenting with the iconic nature of their costumes, Ukrainian illustrator Yuri Krasnoshchok has distilled the masks and faces of numerous fictional heroes to sparse geometric shapes in a minimalist series called simply “Masks of Superheroes.”

Spider-Man, represented only by those oversize white eyes, is probably the most successful of the bunch, but most of them are almost instantly recognizable, without the aid of the characters’ names.

If you haven’t already started working on your Halloween costume, let’s face it, you probably weren’t planning anything elaborate. So forget that bright idea you had back in August of dressing as Groot or Rocket Raccoon: With only a couple of weeks left, you’re going to the party as Star-Lord.

ThinkGeek makes it easy with this Star-Lord hooded T-shirt with LED mask. It allows you to maintain your not-so-secret identity as Peter Quill until you reach the party (the shirt mimics the lines of his leather jacket, but otherwise looks like a regular V-neck).

If you’re a Guardians of the Galaxy fan with a taste for slightly retro T-shirts, we have a couple of suggestions for how you can spend a little of that holiday cash.

RIPT takes us back to the ’70s with “Ziggy Starlord,” which mashes together David Bowie and Peter Quill in the best possible way. If a T-shirt isn’t to your liking, Piercek25’s design is also available as a hoodie, a baby’s onesie, poster or coaster. They’re only available for another 10 hours or so, however.

ThinkGeek, which already offered Captain America and Winter Soldier hoodies, has added a couple of Guardians of the Galaxy sweatshirts to its lineup.

Seen in July at Comic-Con International, the licensed Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon hoodies mimic the heroes’ costumes; the former comes complete with mask, and the latter with ears (but alas, no tail). They’re $79.99 each, but they might make a pretty good gift for those Guardians fans in your life. Or, y’know, treat yo self.

You won’t be the only one dressed as Groot for Halloween

groot-guardians

If there were any doubt that every party you attend this month will essentially be a forest of Groots, take a glance at Fandango’s annual survey of movie-inspired Halloween costumes, which found the breakout star of Guardians of the Galaxy is the top choice this year among men.

Maleficent leads among women, followed by Katniss from The Hunger Games, Mystique from X-Men: Days of Future Past, Black Widow from The Avengers/Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy.
