Nothing can stop this week’s Shelf Porn

004

We’ve always heard “Nothing can stop the Juggernaut, but this week’s Shelf Porn puts that old adage to the test when Juggernaut meets an even BIGGER Juggernaut. Luckily neither of them can actually move, because they’re statues, or else we’d have quite a collision.

Today’s collection comes from Peter in Great Britain, who shows us his hardcovers, statues, books and more. If you’d like to see your collection here, you can find submission details at the end of the post.

And now let’s hear from Peter …

Shelf Porn Face-off | Who has the best Shelf Porn? You decide!

poll_wide_shelfporn

I’ve noted in the past that Shelf Porn isn’t a competition — it’s a celebration of the diversity of collections from fans all over the world. Well, today we’re going to push that philosophy to the side for a good old-fashioned, knock-down, drag-out Shelf Porn Face-off! Two collections enter, but only one can leave the champion.

It started when I received an email from Tommy Baldwin, who said that he and his friend Shawn Hoklas wanted us to help settle the question “Who has the better room/collection?” I suggested we put it out to our readers to help decide. So, I’ve posted both sets of pictures today, and I’ve set up a poll so that you can vote for the room you think is better. If you aren’t sure how to decide, you can use the same criteria they use on Chopped — creativity, presentation and taste.

You can view Tommy’s collection below, then jump over to page two to take a look at Shawn’s. Finally, on page three, you’ll find a poll so you can vote for your choice. I’ll leave it open for a week, and then next Saturday we’ll declare a winner. Update: And we have a winner! Click over to the poll page to see who won.

Special thanks to Tommy and Shawn for sharing their collections with us. Now check them out!

Petition asks Edmonton to build giant Wolverine statue

wolverineWhat would make Edmonton, Alberta, Canada a “‘world class’ city?” How about a 1,000-foot statue of Wolverine?

Just like “the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York City,” the Wolverine statue “would be a major boon for tourism in the city,” writes Brian LaBelle in his petition on Change.org. “It is also important because it is what is commonly referred to as a ‘catalyst project,’ meaning it will spur greater growth on the downtown of Alberta’s capital city and create numerous spin-off projects in much the same way that the X-Men comic book spun off dozens of other successful books.”

The petition couldn’t come at a better time, as there’s already a project happening to revitalize the downtown area of Edmonton — and build a new arena for the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. A commenter suggests that perhaps the petition is a parody and “provides a clear example of how poorly conceived the current Arena deal with [Oilers owner Daryl] Katz is.” I can only hope that isn’t the case, as I’ve never been to Edmonton myself, but a statue of Wolverine would certainly be enough to get me to renew my passport and head north.
