The Biggest Superhero Films That Didn't Happen, Part 2
Comic Books, Film
After teasing the comic for the past three months on his DeviantART page, Witchblade and Aphrodite IX artist Stjepan Šejić has revealed his creator-owned Death Vigil will debut in July from, perhaps unsurprisingly, Top Cow Productions.
“You know I had to go with my Top Cow gang,” wrote Šejić, who’s also been busy preparing for the print release of Sunstone, the erotic comedy he created with his wife Linda Luksic-Šejić.
Sex and superheroes are a potentially dangerous combination, as controversies over the past couple of years involving depictions of Superman and Wonder Woman, Batman and Catwoman, and Starfire have demonstrated time and again. However, Stjepan Sejic isn’t afraid of jumping into the fire, and adding a dash of humor.
Sejic, artist of the Top Cow series Aphrodite IX as well as his graphic novel series Ravine, frequently posts amusing sketches, pin-ups and editorial cartoons such as the above on his DeviantArt page. He’s well aware of the fetishism aspects of superhero genre, specifically that of women, and even pokes fun at it in his work.
Writer, and Comic Book Resources columnist, Ron Marz (Silver Surfer, Green Lantern, Witchblade) has kicked off his fourth annual Comics for Tots auction on eBay. The first round of items, which can be found here, includes original art by Stjepan Sejik, Scott Kollins, and Darryl Banks, as well as a Joker action figure. Marz announced the sale Wednesday on Twitter, and he says more items are on the way. Once shipping costs are paid, all the money will be donated to Toys for Tots.
Last year’s Comics for Tots event raised $2,300. “We purchased and donated multiple loads of toys for the local Toys for Tots effort, everything from action figures to dolls, board games to sports equipment, books to iPods,” he wrote. “This is all possible because of you. We were able to make Christmas brighter for some children in need.”
Artist Stjepan Šejić is no stranger to drawing the female form: He’s made a name for himself with that on such Top Cow titles as Witchblade and the current series Aphrodite IX. But what he does in his off time seems arguably more exciting than even a green-haired assassin or a supernatural female cop. It’s called Sunstone.
Serialized on his DeviantArt page, the slice-of-life comic is a collaboration between Šejić and his wife, writer Linda Luksic-Šejić. It revolves around a lesbian romance but is set inside the risque world of fetishism. In the opening dialogue of the comic, the primary character Lisa describes it pretty aptly, although tongue-in-cheek, with this: “Dear reader, this is the story of how I met the woman of my life, the one that compli … Wait, don’t leave yet! This book has lots of Hot Lesbian Bondage Sex!!!! Good … That got your attention …”
