Animal Man ‘Evolve or Die’ shirt arrives in stores, then debuts in comic
In a clever bit of product placement and cross-promotion, DC Comics is offering “Evolve or Die” T-shirts featuring Travel Foreman’s cover for Animal Man #1 just ahead of the shirt’s debut in the seventh issue of the series. It certainly makes sense within the context of the relaunched title, which opened with a Believer interview in which Buddy Baker was asked how it felt “to have your face plastered on kids’ dorm rooms and T-shirts all over the country.”
The shirts will be available in direct market stores, and at GraffitiDesigns.com, at the end of the month (prices range from $18.95 to $24.95, depending on size). There’s no word yet as to when we should expect that “World’s Best Grandpa” design.
Animal Man #7, by Jeff Lemire and Steve Pugh, arrives March 7.

Next round of ‘Comics-On Tees’ feature Roberson, Allred and monkeys
The folks the social T-shirt site Threadless are gearing up for a fourth volume of their “Comics-On Tees” line, where they ask a writer and four artists to design shirts that tell a story. Although they won’t be officially announced until Jan. 30, they did reveal the creator involved and teased some artwork from the shirts. And based on what they’ve shown so far, it looks like the theme this time revolves around monkeys.
Volume 4 is written by Chris Roberson of iZombie and Superman fame, with designs by artists Mike Allred, Colleen Coover, Chris Samnee and Francesco Francavilla. You can see some of Allred’s artwork above, and Francavilla’s after the jump.

WeLoveFine.com assembles an Avengers T-shirt design contest
The fine folks at WeLoveFine.com T-shirts are holding a design-a-shirt contest in honor of the Avengers hitting movie screens later this year, and they’re giving away all sorts of cash prizes for the winners.
All designs must include the “big four” who appear in the movie–Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man–while Hawkeye, Black Widow and Loki can be used at the designer’s discretion. You also can’t use the Avengers logo or any likeness that looks like the actors from the film. Ryan Penagos, a.k.a. Marvel’s Agent M, will judge the contest with an as-yet-unnamed second judge.
A full run-down of the rules and prizes is available on the contest page. Submissions must be received by 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Feb. 12. Artists can submit up to five designs, and the contest is open to U.S. residents only.

Superhero x-ray shirts offer a glimpse of what Superman sees
Ever wonder what’s going on inside your favorite super-hero? Beneath the mask, beneath the skin even… you know their real inner self? Well now you can in a an eye-opening series of shirts. Take a look:
Thanks to the ever-resourceful Mike Sterling for the find, you don’t have to burrow through Previews to see DC’s finest the way Superman can see them with his x-ray vision. The vision of a green-tinted skull with the superhero domino mask is frightening in itself.
I, for one, fully endorse this trend and hope the line is successful enough to we can see more shirts in the line. Who wouldn’t want to see how Plastic Man’s skeleton looks when it bends?
You can find images of each shirt after the jump.

By Blackest (Friday) Night, no bargain shall escape my sight …
If you’re like me, instead of heading out to the mall to face the hectic Black Friday crowds (some of whom are apparently armed with pepper spray), you’re sitting at home nursing a turkey hangover and looking for good deals on the internet. Here are a few places you may want to check out for your gift-giving or personal shopping needs, and if you’re up for adventuring outdoors, Bleeding Cool has a great roundup of shops holding sales today.
ComiXology has a bunch of digital comics for 99 cents today. DC Comics is holding a Blackest Friday sale, allowing you to buy each issue of the Blackest Night crossover for 99 cents each. Marvel has Jonathan Hickman’s Fantastic Four issues on sale for 99 cents, while IDW has their Star Trek comics on sale.

Comic Couture | Mighty Fine releases expanded line of comic shirts for women
In the halcyon days when I was a young comics fan, getting a comics-themed T-shirt was hard to do; you might find a stray shirt in your local Spencers or might order a shirt by mail from Graffiti Designs, but even then your selection was small — and essentially non-existent if you were a woman. But with the advent of cheap t-shirt printing and the internet, that’s not a problem for today’s comic fans.
Earlier this week, T-shirt makers Mighty Fine expanded their line of women’s shirts with a number of unique designs, such as the Phoenix seen at right. These classic designs, plus some inspired by art nouveau Alphonse Mucha and 1980s fashion artist Patrick Nagel, make this the perfect place to buy gifts for the geek girl in your life.

Comic Couture | Aquaman vs. literal litter on new shirt
Just when you thought Aquaman might be getting a little respect–his New 52 book has been one of the highlights of the relaunch for me–along comes Threadless to hold him back. The King of the Seven Seas offers a reminder that you should always cut the plastic rings on six-pack holders before throwing them away, because you never know where they might end up or who might get stuck in them. I imagine Black Manta is working on a giant net made of them right now …
The shirt is available for purchase here.

Chiang, Crabapple, Cavallaro support Shirts For A Cure at NYCC
Shirts For A Cure, a project started by the Syrentha J. Savio Endowment to raise money in their efforts to provide financial assistance to underprivileged women who cannot afford breast cancer medicine and therapy, sells exclusive shirts for various bands and musical artists on their site. And they’ll be at the New York Comic Con this weekend selling shirts created by artists like Mike Cavallaro (his design is shown above), Molly Crabapple and Brian Ewing.
In addition, Wonder Woman artist Cliff Chiang will hold a signing at their booth Friday at 4 p.m., where you can get one of the last 50 of his limited edition Wonder Woman print.
And even if you can’t attend the con, go check out their site … they’ve got some cool shirts for a great cause.

Comic Couture | Remember the time I almost became a superhero?
Author and blogger Sean Kleefeld is getting into the T-shirt business as well, with a series of shirts that show “slightly less dramatic results” for various superhero origins. For instance, maybe a certain radioactive spider bite didn’t result in someone getting spider powers … it just resulted in a rash:
The shirts, which also include riffs on the origins for Thor, Batman, Green Lantern and Hulk, are available through Cafe Press.

Comic Couture | Show your mutant love with X-Men tees
The X-Men have had a pretty good summer so far, what with the cool, retro X-Men: First Class flick and the grand start to the Schism event. So what better way to declare your love for mutantkind than with one of Mighty Fine‘s new X-Men T-shirts. In addition to the above Young Mutants in Love shirt, they’ve also got two nice character-oriented shirts for Iceman and Nightcrawler, two “90s rock” shirts featuring Professor X and Storm, and a “We can get along” shirt featuring mankind and mutantkind shaking hands … well, we know that won’t last long. But one can hope.
Check’em out after the jump.

Comic Couture | Marvel teams with the Dallas Cowboys for apparel line
I think if I mention the NFL and Marvel Comics in the same blog post, there has to be a reference to NFL SuperPro. Union rules, or something. So there you go.
With that out of the way … Marvel and the Dallas Cowboys announced this week a line of T-shirts, hoodies and other apparel featuring the football team and Marvel characters. “Through an agreement that enables the Dallas Cowboys to license Marvel’s Super Heroes, the team will develop co-branded merchandise featuring Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, and many other Super Heroes decked out in Cowboys’ team colors, logos and jerseys.” What, no Rawhide Kid, Two-Gun Kid or Kid Colt?
If you’re thinking these might be popular with comic retailers in the Dallas area, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram had the same thought, as they reached out to Lone Star Comics owner Buddy Saunders, who owns six stores in the Metroplex. “Sports fans are predominantly male, and comic fans are predominantly male. It’s sort of like branding yourself with two things — the team you like and your favorite superheroes,” he told the paper.
This isn’t the first time that Marvel has crossed over into the world of sports merchandise. Marvel characters have appeared on several NBA shirts, including the Hulk on a Celtics shirt and of course the infamous one for the (cough, cough) world champion Miami Heat.
