This beautiful Batgirl print could be yours, if you’re fast (and lucky)

It turns out the announcement of the Batman: The Animated Series vinyl box set was only the beginning of Mondo’s Bat-bonanza.

The collectibles boutique has also unveiled a Batgirl poster by Gianmarco Magnani, featuring the late Yvonne Craig from the 1966 Batman TV series, and a Batman Begins print by Patrick Leger. Magnani previously created Batman and Robin prints, so if you were lucky enough to purchase those, the Batgirl would complete the set.

When Batgirl met Merv Griffin (and Batman drummed with Spock)

Reiko Douglas, Yvonne Craig and Merv Griffin

For many men of a certain age, and more than a few women, Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl represented their first childhood crush. Confidant, sassy and just a little flirty, her heroine was a chaste counterbalance to the overtly sexual Catwoman, whether played by Julie Newmar or Eartha Kitt (there’s probably a master’s thesis in that). She was the purple-suited equivalent of your best friend’s older sister, or your next-door neighbor — the smart-and-pretty girl whom you thought you might have a chance with.

Batgirl was also wildly popular, even as Batman’s ratings flagged in its second season, as these 1967 photos from The Merv Griffin Show demonstrate. While the images have cropped up online before, it was difficult to pass them by when they appeared again overnight on Retronaut; I even poked around to find a couple of more shots of Craig backstage. It’s difficult to imagine an actor like Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson or Chris Hemsworth to appear in superhero costume on The Late Show With David Letterman or Conan, but there Craig is, looking like she’s having a blast.

As a bonus, I’ve also thrown in a photo Leonard Nimoy tweeted earlier this week of him drumming with Adam West, presumably in the late 1960s.

Adam West-era Batgirl costume worn by Yvonne Craig up for auction

Own a piece of comic history as the memorable costume worn by actress Yvonne Craig in the 1960s Batman television series is being put up for auction. With bids starting at $2,000, it’s a  perfect gift for any serious Batman collector or cosplayer with money to spare. The suit includes the unitard, utility belt, gloves, boots and cape.

The costume has a unique story; it was only worn once on television in Batgirl’s first appearance. Craig complained about how the points in the mask cut into her cheeks, so the studio ordered another with rounded cheeks for later episodes.

Created by the prolific Hollywood costume factory Western Costume, this auction includes paperwork and authentication from both them and Yvonne Craig herself.
